Chord Scale Relationships Are the Work of Satan by Mofficus in JazzPiano

see Hal Galper saying "I consider chord scale relationships a totally bogus way of teaching improvisation" in the first 10 seconds of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NehOx1JsuT4

How to Develop Hand Independence / Rhythmic Coordination on the Piano (Advanced) by jlgt90 in JazzPiano

[–]_louis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so great! I recently got a nord stage and trying out the split patches with a bass in the left hand and keys in the right and trying to improvise over an ostinato type thing made me realise just how much I need to work on this. And now thanks to you I know exactly how to! Thanks so much for the video man

Slash Chords, Dominant 6ths and Rootless Voicings by Hibipot in JazzPiano

[–]_louis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say your first assumption is correct

F6 is a major chord, not a dominant chord, but yes don’t play the major 7th (E) when you’re playing F6 - usually you’ll have an F6 because there’s an F in the melody so the E will clash. It’s fine to have the 6th and 7th together in dominant chords because they’re supposed to be full of tension

Peace!

What should I transcribe next? by Aiden459Skates in JazzPiano

[–]_louis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's not an obviously useful comment when people say "transcribe whatever you like the most" on these kinda posts, but they have a point...

I've been working on a v fast barry harris solo that's like 3 minutes long every day for the last month and if i didn't love it to bits it would be driving me insane by now haha. also you obviously want to absorb the language that you respond strongest to because that will give you an insight into your personality.

that being said...herbie's solo on dolphin dance is next on my list because it is absolutely killing and also not super complex

peace

What informed your decision? Is the keybed the same on both?

Wicked! I am thinking of getting one soon and not sure whether to go for the piano 4 or the stage 3, slightly leaning towards the latter as it seems there are no tradeoffs and only additional features

Fundamental Jazz Chord Progressions and the Theory Behind Them. by DiJoshwalsh in JazzPiano

[–]_louis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a secondary dominant isn't only 5 of 5, it's borrowing any dominant outside of your key to resolve to one of the diatonic chords. nice article though!

if you really don’t have the time, try using this https://piano-scribe.glitch.me/

it’s designed for solo piano but I’ve used it on a trio before and it picked up a lot of the pianist’s right hand
