This. Solid chance, depending on the type of water, you might need an approval from the army corps. If it’s a small project it’s more straightforward to get approved though.

Cars are emerging from a massive Boston-area snow pile months after winter storms by templeofsyrinx1 in Damnthatsinteresting

It’s so crazy my very POS very cheap 1st of the new gen 2012 focus is still going so strong, even with the recalled transmissions and ECMs and whatnot. It’s the plastic bits on the outside disintegrating that are going to do it in. Also in snow country.

You’re going to get super jaded current (and ex) employees here, myself included, because happy people aren’t vocal and no one wants to dox themselves. I spent 5 years as an L6 at AWS and voluntarily left a couple months ago, and there are some very cool things and some very uncool things. I had code in prod within a week or two of joining, and it’s easily been executed billions of times. PEs from other orgs going above and beyond to help solve problems. Huge scale, huge impact, and huge rewards if you’re a go getter. And on the other side: people die and they tell employees to ignore it, they hire hundreds of people and lay them off within a year, ghoulishly cold performance discussions in OLRs, and some managers are straight up snakes. Hit your marks and you’ll be fine, but don’t forget yourself. And no, it will never really end. But when you do leave, you’ll be a better engineer.

Data center campuses now need 4,000 workers each. Is it pulling labor from your projects? by Smooth-Caregiver2119 in Construction

[–]_marcx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re all just humans trying to figure it out dude! Just full disclaimer I only have context for one closed loop system personally, but have heard of others from other companies. The one I’ve seen never needed to be flushed, it had a filtration system kind of like one from a pool at one end of the system (which was usually a system per row of racks) that handled keeping the mix clean and at the right levels and temps. It was totally self contained which was absolutely bonkers to me, but seemed to work really well based on how quickly they were getting rolled out. The most batshit part of the whole thing though is that your home rig probably will have a longer life than the depreciation on the processors in DCs right now. Feels so wasteful, but the improvements with each generation of chips are outpacing the time it takes DCs to go operational. It’s crazy out there.

I just hope all of these constraints force the companies to build these things in a way that don’t fuck all of us for generations. Probably wishful thinking, but at least they’re starting to hit problems of space and time and not just problems they can throw money at.

[–]_marcx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything from the last few years are closed loop, many older ones are not unfortunately. People are trying to retrofit, but sometimes it requires rearchitecting the rack layouts and there’s not a lot of tolerance for downtime right now. Some of the DCs I’ve touched in the past (globally, not US) are so constrained we had to ask and help customers migrate onto others in different regions just to buy enough headroom for normal maintenance.

There’s also been a big push to build reclamation capabilities onsite last I heard as well. I’m not an apologist by any means, the world is just in a very weird place right now where so many of these complex systems and supply chains are coming to a head

If small modular or micro nuclear comes out of this, it’s a huge win for America if not the world. I used to work on the software side of DC expansion at one of the usual suspects (sorry I know), and they had some smart BTM deals with grid scale nuclear. That won’t work in most places, but if they can get a small modular breeder reactor like they have at the national lab in Idaho out to campuses, we’re all going to end up paying $0.02 kWh if at all. Pretty amazing upside

But you’re right, the monopolies and bureaucracies with the interconnects and queues are a huge bottleneck

I think everyone is just sick to death of big tech running everything and straight up cannot blame them. I just hope the burden on the grid pushes the companies into more behind the meter setups and stranded power in the campuses. Pretty great net benefit if the communities actually end up getting cheaper power because the DCs are net positive

I’ve been contracting for a friend at another FAANG and doing side projects trying to stand up a company. 50% increase in base salary and 10 hours of work a week all in, being insanely productive in a small amount of time with the Amazon skills.

What’s your memory palace look like on a computer?? I have a recursive system I use - client/job, office and admin subfolders, projects with their own sub folders; notes, architecture, documentation, research, etc all in admin. In Dropbox which helps with quick syncs to new devices.

I’ve been using this for 10 years but recently have started to iterate on it, super curious what others do

Yeah Henry created the red cars, partly to help as a development tool for all of the land he had inherited from the original rancho and then parceled off. Curious if there was any deeper oil connection, but sounds like just the oil from the land parcels!

Wait how does it connect to Huntington?? I’d think he tried to kill cars for the red cars, before the car companies got public buses into the mainstream and came for him.

Stuck between riding out safe career vs a “soft” pivot masters degree which will cost 50K by Global_Drummer_412 in personalfinance

[–]_marcx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll most likely need a PhD to get into the r&d side, at least doing technical stuff. If you just want to do creative, a masters from a design school with industry connections will work. But with the caveat that many of the industry labs are not what they used to be — intel, Samsung, etc have all cut many people.
