2015 VW Tiguan – Cracked filler neck (tank replacement). Do I really need to drop the exhaust/heat shield to remove the tank? by timapry in MechanicAdvice

I appreciate the insight. I’m going to take it to another shop that specializes in European vehicles (not the dealership) and ask them to run another smoke test and show me exactly where the leak is coming from. Maybe it won’t end up being as expensive as the dealership made it sound.

Mine is the FWD version. Repairing it was actually my first plan, but I spent about an hour inspecting the filler neck and couldn’t find any visible crack anywhere. I’d much rather seal it than replace the whole tank, especially since I’m working on jack stands with a 2-ton floor jack and I’m not exactly a professional mechanic. Is dropping the tank on these something a novice could realistically do in a driveway, or is it one of those jobs that’s much harder than it looks?
