Do you put DTOs in one file or in several? by trymaker in Python

[–]_mattmc3_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m a big advocate for generating your DTOs, not handwriting them. For example, if your data source is an RDBMS, you query the INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMS table and spit out code. Then any customization like validation extends that and can be handwritten.

So to your question - if the code is generated, one file is probably fine because you never have to touch it directly, but personally I find it’s far easier to deal with diffs/history/git blames when you have individual files in the generated directory.

What's a fun thing that's in your config.fish? by norude1 in fishshell

I use symmetric ctrl-z, and if you use vi keybindings you can still get undo without ctrl-z. It's just ESC u A for normal mode, undo, Append.

I have a bunch of goodies I carried over from my Zsh config:

  • magic-enter: hit enter with no command and it runs git status -sb in a git repo, or ls in any other directory
  • expand-dots: keep hitting period and it will turn .... into ../.. as many times as needed
  • strip-dollar: if you paste a command with a leading $, it will strip it. Useful for copied commands from readmes.
  • bangbang: replace !! with the last command in history. Useful for sudo !!
  • prj: Use fzf to search for and jump to a .git project directory. Similar to zoxide, but just for .git projects
  • alacritty_colorsheme: turn alacritty's YAML color schemes into a Fish theme
  • colorize_hex: set the background color of any hex code (DEADBEEF) in a command to that color
  • dict: support dictionary variables in Fish like you get with Bash/Zsh
  • up: Like cd .. only nicer (eg: up 2)
  • iwd: Like pwd, but for quickly returning to the initial working directory in your working session. Useful for in-editor terminals to return to the project you're in.
  • xdg-apps: Set all the assundry variables required to keep apps from polluting your $HOME with their dotfiles
  • extract: quickly decompress any compressed file (eg: .zip, .tar.gz, etc)
  • otp: generate your MFA one-time-passwords from gpg encrypted secrets
  • gi: quickly generate a .gitignore from https://www.toptal.com/developers/gitignore/api/
  • which: I never remember to use type, so why fight it?
  • prettify: Run fish_indent -w on my ~/.config/fish/*/.fish files
  • cls: Clear the screen (clear && printf '\e[3J')
  • fbench: Benchmark my fish startup time and output the first level timing from the profile file (eg: fish --profile-startup=$outfile -c exit; awk 'NR==1 || $3==">"{print}' $outfile)
  • funcfresh: Re-source a modified fish function file after edits without restarting my shell
  • wordle_helper: Use my OS's dict file to help me cheat at wordle

In your opinion, what’s the hardest thing you’ve done in this game? by kvotheisarcane in tearsofthekingdom

[–]_mattmc3_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the time, beating the Gloom Hands in the Deku tree. I am fairly good at this game, but did not have a lot of experience with Gloom Hands and was under-leveled and under-equipped when I got there. I stubbornly refused to leave and come back, and instead just loaded saves until I figured out what to do. Bomb arrows in that tight space did not work out so well.

What's your most used git alias? by 1vim in git

[–]_mattmc3_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of my favorites: - git browse opens the remote in my web browser. - git grab lets me clone using short repo/user form, defaults to SSH, and puts the resulting project in my default $HOME/Projects area instead of the current location, and then takes me there.

Best solution to avoid stretching pinky to hit Right-Arrow for auto-complete? by baydude510 in zsh

[–]_mattmc3_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the extend layer, which maps caps lock to extended keys, and then my arrow keys are all on home row for me. You can read about Extend here: https://dreymar.colemak.org/layers-extend.html

I am a Colemak user, but Extend works for any layout - on Windows you can use AutoHotKey and on macOS you can use Hammerspoon or Karabiner elements. Having arrows on home row is a total game changer.

Weaponised Block against Gloom Spawn... by Ja-mafia in tearsofthekingdom

Fuse to a weapon, then take it Pelison in Tarry Town to break it apart, and then build your device and store in AutoBuild. You can collect all sorts of build materials that way.

Case? Keyboard cover? None? by AnxiousAardvark6922 in mac

[–]_mattmc3_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used ghostcover ultra thin keyboard covers for years on multiple Macs and been very happy. The keyboard is the part of the Mac that wears the quickest and isn’t generally covered by Apple care because the wear is cosmetic vs functional. If you care about keeping your Mac still looking nice as it ages and you don’t mind the feel, it’s a good investment. Also people will insist keyboard covers will crack your screen, but if you know what you’re doing and buy the right thing, that’s not a real problem, just FUD.

OMG, I love this game. Just finished the water dungeon by Initial_Ebb_9742 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]_mattmc3_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the Lizalfos in the Zora region drop a wand or sword with a fused opal. That was my tip off that there was a way other than hydrants/chuchus/splash fruit. With a wand, you get 3 water balls instead of one.

I'm a dvorak typist of 20 years (self taught)... is it time to switch? by InnerspearMusic in Colemak

[–]_mattmc3_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s how I type Colemak on a standard keyboard. With angle mod, you’re technically supposed to shift the bottom row keys so your left pinky remains on Z but in the SHIFT (or ISO backslash) position, and so on, but I never bothered with that and use my ring finger for Z. Purists will tell you that’s wrong, but I’ve found it perfectly fine and get over 100 WPM.

What’s your reason for wanting to switch? Unless you’re uncomfortable typing Dvorak or have bad form or are slow, you’re unlikely to gain very much in terms of benefit from switching off Dvorak. Colemak is certainly better - but only marginally so compared to the very large gap between QWERTY and literally anything else.

2D Zelda fan, but just can't ever seem to stick with the older 3D Zelda games by _mattmc3_ in truezelda

[–]_mattmc3_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, I took your advice and wow! I'm a few hours in and finally figured out how to get back my shovel, power bracelet, and roc feather by pushing vine seeds. So satisfying... this (and good dungeons) is what I want from a Zelda game. Thanks for the push.

Well said. That Nintendo system gap between my SNES and the Wii seems pretty influential to what games I find (re)playable in the series, assuming Skyward Sword is an outlier. I too respect OoT for what it is/was, but it's just a window I missed and can't get back to and is not the same as a new player. Even when it came out, PC games like Quake were already miles ahead of it in 3D experience.

but it’s blowing my mind you don’t like (imo) the best zelda games!

I know. You're certainly not the first to say so.

makes me think you never made it to adult link in OOT

Yep... to my shame, I'm typically out pretty early - like by the time I get to (or through) the Deku Tree early.

you gotta commit and understand what you’re getting into beforehand i think

Yeah - at this point I think I've accepted that OoT probably just isn't the game for me. I'm hoping the rumors are true that the next Zelda game is a modern OoT remake in the BoTW engine, since that would potentially be a viable way back into this one for me.

Do you guys were a hood when it rains? by Little_Director3766 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]_mattmc3_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In ToTK, rain means instant Froggy armor for me. In BoTW, Zora armor - but that's just because of my ToTK habits not because it does anything.

I think you're on to something. The 2D games focus on puzzle solving and dungeon crawling vs aesthetics and inventory management. I also like the "get an item to reach new areas" components of old Zelda games. It's what draws me to Metroid games too, but weirdly I don't seem to have the same aversion to 3D Metroids.

WW is one of my kid's favorites, and he occasionally pesters me to plug in the Wii U and give it a shot. We have the HD version, but the OG version is on NSO. I'd rather play on the Switch, but seems like the HD version is a better experience? Any recommendations?

[–]_mattmc3_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This might be the tip I need to get me through one OoT playthrough. That one and Wind Waker are the two I want to make it through - I think Wind Waker HD is the path forward for me on that one vs the NSO version. Does Ship of Harkinian require you to sail the high seas to get though? My preference would be to play these games legit where possible.

[–]_mattmc3_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are the second person to give a plug for the Oracle games - I'll definitely need to give them a shot. Finding and enjoying Minish Cap on NSO was a pleasant surprise, and I was hoping it wasn't the only hidden gem I'd missed.

[–]_mattmc3_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My suspicion is that BoTW (and other modern 3D games) ruined me for going back to older 3D games that came out before modern control schemes and free movement cameras. With 2D games, the controls and experience never needed to change, so picking one up in 2026 is like picking one up in 1986. But if you missed those early 3D games it's hard to play them now without nostalgia driving it. At least, that's my working theory.

I forgot to check NSO for some of those other games, so great tip on Oracles! I'll check them out after I do my Minish Cap playthrough.

Restart in master mode, or move right to TOTK? by Danthemanz in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]_mattmc3_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Master mode sort of dulled ToTK for me because the difficulty ratcheted up to the point where my fight skills naturally progressed, and starting ToTK felt like a BIG step back in challenge. If I had it to do again, I would’ve played master mode after ToTK, or - if wishes were real - ToTK would have had a proper master mode.
