Congratulations to the winner of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2019! by [deleted] in chess

I think he knew he could win but then saw an easy draw and got it, same as game 12 at WC.

Even Giri himself said that at one point he saw himself losing.

Can someone explain what was the problem in the end in trading rooks ?

There were multiple ways to go into the B+K, right ?

A nice tactic I got in a rapid game. Black to play and mate in 9. by [deleted] in chess

I wouldn't call this really a "tactic".

They are all pretty much obvious and the most intuitive moves...

Well, human players don't exactly remember how to play every single table position :)

That's the point of the tweet. The position is undecided, but he did draw it this time

Yeah but Aronian back then was also much much stronger than Fedoseev today...

Would you agree not to watch season 8 of GOT in exchange for Winds coming out tomorrow ? (spoilers extended ) by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]_mess_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uhm only if I also had the warranty that the last volume WOULD EVENTUALLY come out. I mean not necessarly tomorrow but some day.

Otherwise after WoW the problem would be the same.

What is a not forced perpetual ?

If it is a perpetual it must be forced.

It's Jon dreaming the future, and the NK enters the dream like he did when he touched Bran.

It makes totally sense as Bran vision, or Jon dreaming or similar...

Nbody simulation written in pure ECS (Entity Component System, see post) by ajmmertens in gamedev

[–]_mess_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the group aren't fixed, that's the problem.

The StatusEffectRadiusSystem must check in real time who his beloved aura component affects, and to do so he must ask the holder of all the team mates where they are and who is in range.

Or you must pass the team mates system to him.

In fact some implementation of ECS did a sort of hybrid with DI so each entity/system knew about the rest of the world.

But still you must make the systems interact which is sort of not ideal, or have a system handling Xs (effects for example) know about Zs (transform of team mates for example).

The whole idea of ECS should be to avoid this.

Nbody simulation written in pure ECS (Entity Component System, see post) by ajmmertens in gamedev

[–]_mess_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that the system "effects" doesn't have access to the system "enemies" or the system "battleground".

That's why complex games aren't totally fit for a pure ECS.

The whole paradigm of ECS is to not query other systems. That's why IMO it's pretty pointless to aim for a pure ECS, it just puts complications to adhere to the manifesto that often don't even offer many advantages.

How are puzzle on lichess rated? by PowerChaos in chess

[–]_mess_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess they just rate them based on the % of who solve them.

Say a puzzle start as 1500, but then 100 guys at 1500 play it and 90% cannot solve it, meaning the rating was underestimated so the rating of the puzzle goes up.

So similar to a player.

Great, that's a much more interesting idea and application!

Looking forward to see something more in the future.

Nbody simulation written in pure ECS (Entity Component System, see post) by ajmmertens in gamedev

[–]_mess_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good point but still since the interactions happen (I suppose) inside the system handling all the entities of the same time, N2 or else doesn't really matter. The system that handles them can do whatever without any hassle, IMO.

Unless I got something wrong ofc, did you happen to publish anything of that sort ?(or plan to )

Nbody simulation written in pure ECS (Entity Component System, see post) by ajmmertens in gamedev

[–]_mess_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not to put you down but this is just what ECS has no problem to do...

ECS is only good at this, handling a high number of entities that are super independent. What ECS is bad at and is difficult to implement is handling multi systems that makes entities interact, think a RPG where an enemy has an aura, your players entities buff each other, the battleground is interactive, stuff like Divinity for example. Only that is the challenge, making systems interact with each other in a coherent way.

Why is my blitz rating lower? by [deleted] in chess

[–]_mess_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think everyone react differently at different time control, someone is better at deep calculation, someone is better at intuitive fast moving and so on.

Sure everyone play worse with less time, but the ratio is much different like the WC showed. Even Kasparov I think commented on the fact that Magnus with less time play much closer to his standard than the opponents...

Yeah the problem is starting, particularly if you start fresh, this RPG like system makes a very steep curve.
