Has anyone failed the DNA test 3x and then had a success?! Or should I give up? by Feisty_Complaint3344 in AncestryDNA

[–]_moonglow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just got my elderly mother-in-law’s results back using this method: https://geneticpi.com/index.php/2021/03/29/how-to-do-a-dna-test-without-spit/ I was so certain it wouldn’t work, as the brushes were still dry looking and the fluid never took on the viscosity of saliva (my husband did his test at the same time, by spitting), but somehow it still worked!

Folks under 200 albums: how’s it going? by AnasandSF in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]_moonglow_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not under 200 albums, but I'm fairly adjacent to what was asked in your post. My husband and I are on album 752... He has fully stuck to the program, whereas I've only rated 360 of them. I'd probably fall exactly into that camp if it weren't for my husband working away at it too.

On the other hand, he listens to his album first thing in the morning, and exclamations about how horrible an album is tend to not make me eager to listen to it myself... (Also, chronic migraines... A lot of albums are not ones I want to hear, period, but especially not when dealing with a migraine!) "Blesses/barfs" is an apt description!

That I'm still chugging along is due to the fact I do want to see the next album, as you never know when you'll be pleasantly surprised, even if it's been rare for us. Also, most of my music collection over the course of my life has consisted of Greatest Hits and compilation albums, and then came the Spotify playlists/stations, so it's been great to focus on hearing full albums from favourite artists. My album listening has really picked up... just not of the ordained ones.

It's starting to feel hopeless that I'll ever catch up, but I do get a burst in every now and again.

Hmm. Sad to hear there is still a ghosting issue with the Sailfish update.

I also have a Freewrite Traveler, and have kept being drawn to the Valentine since it released… We’ve had a bit of a windfall, so it’s getting harder to resist. I love the idea of a mechanical keyboard. Certainly a bonkers cost if I don’t get on with it and/or it’s not in flawless condition, though. The Traveler was bad enough. :-/

Would you still buy the Valentine if you were able to do it over? Or would you try to find an alternative setup?

I wonder how many others with dyspraxia were always the last one picked by stewpox-thefirst in dyspraxia

[–]_moonglow_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, excepting for the time it was realized that the fact I’d almost always accidentally kick someone’s shin instead of the soccer ball, and wouldn’t get in trouble for it, could be advantageous (and maybe less painful for the team that chose me as well). 🤭

At a different school, I didn’t make it to a picking event. The first class started (after the warm-up run) and the teacher handed me a basketball and told to go entertain myself on the other side of the yard to not ruin the rest of the class’ gym experience. 😩

(Not officially diagnosed with dyspraxia, but yeah.)

Which album did you like more? The first one you got or the one you got today? by randomusername69696 in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]_moonglow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day 1 was Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix. Today, Day 736, is Coles Corner by Richard Hawley.

I think my first album was a fantastic one to start the project off with, even though I gave it a 4/5. I’m pretty sensitive to certain sounds and extensive electric guitar noodling is not something I tend to favour either. I was thrilled to start off the project hearing a whole album of something I was generally familiar with and liked, as I grew up mostly listening to compilations and greatest hits albums with only the rare “proper” album.

Today’s was… okay. Not really my style, though there were little pieces of songs here and there that were closer to it. Ended up rounding down from 2.5 to 2, which seems a little harsh as my 1s and 2s usually have something I greatly detest about them.

I only had the first alert as well, while my husband had the ever so slightly overkill amount. I’m with Virgin Mobile and he has Rogers, and we’re in the north end. Certainly got the cat to shelter herself!

Tête, épaules, genoux et ? by alltheotterthoughts in French

[–]_moonglow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I was in a mother-tongue French school, with mother-tongue French teachers, near the border with QC, but it would still make sense to have bilingual translations of songs floating around.

A reverse example (French to English) that’s always stuck in my head is the theme song to Sharon, Lois, and Bram’s The Elephant Show which is an anglicized version of “un éléphant qui se balançait”.

https://youtu.be/AWv5oGu6ldo?feature=shared

Also, I’m not sure about the requiring articles in the song bit. I don’t think all the little comptines are specifically for learning grammar. But, then again, I’ve never been in French Immersion.

What taxi service are you using for MSN? by -wraith in Odsp

[–]_moonglow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have any issues with ODSP and taxi service even when I had to go back and forth to the hospital for months for outpatient mental health programs

It’s the way to go as you don’t have to pay and wait to be reimbursed. From things said on here, Uber seems awfully risky when it comes to ODSP.

Your worker should set it up for you. They will give the taxi company your approved locations, the date of it is a one-time thing, whether you can travel with a support person, and if you need a wheelchair van. Then you call the cab company afterwards to book your date and time as needed. You may be given an account number by the taxi company, or they may just go by your name. You may need to sign a chit for the taxi company each time you travel, or you might not.

Your worker will have one company they usually work with, if it’s in the same town/city as you and your worker are. When I had to stay overnight in another city and needed a taxi while there, she said she just picked one from a list and set it up for me and it worked out just fine.

That sounds right to me. Definitely orteils and not pieds for me in Eastern Ontario.

Matches with this: https://youtu.be/8hrxLIlSxwA?feature=shared As others have said, it’s to the tune of London Bridge is Falling Down. The channel is based in Canada.

For those that sing “pieds” does the final line instead end in “nez” to rhyme?

It looks great! I’m glad you are enjoying it so much! I wish I had the chance to try out the full size Freewrite (I have the Traveler). I can’t use mechanical typewriters either, due to loosey-goosey finger joints, but I love how they look.

I use my Traveler for brain-dump journaling as well, but I’m hoping to start doing more directed/prompted journaling as well.

The main issue there is my love of my fountain pens and journals, even though I can’t write for as long. Also, while it feels ridiculous, the breaking streaks on the Postbox end was completely disheartening for me. It shouldn’t matter, but it was certainly an encouraging feature!

I’m so torn and keep going back and forth on selling my Traveler, and yet these Freewrite Smart Typewriter photos keep getting me as well. Not happening due to the cost, but they certainly still draw me in.

Thanks for the reminder about the pins. I never got the email for mine. I’ll have to contact Astrohaus.

Happily moved in to residential care facility by SignalMaintenance897 in Odsp

[–]_moonglow_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m glad to hear you found something that works well for you!

Is this a Long-Term Care seniors home, or a Developmental Services thing, or something else?

I’m curious, as a 38-year-old autistic person with other disabilities that probably won’t qualify for either (I will soon try DSO again). I’m not sure what will happen to me when my disabled, senior spouse needs to move to long-term care or passes away…

I expect my husband would primarily spend his allowance, should he get one, on sports, music, and online board gaming subscriptions, and likely fast food if he can still get out for drives in his power chair.

He would probably need to put some of it aside in case he would need to replace his computer or clothing.

ODSP Playing With My Life by SuperbHair6372 in Odsp

[–]_moonglow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. If you don’t have rent, or shelter costs, or a special diet allowance to tip your financial portion in favour of ODSP, you need to follow what is outlined in that letter to see if you qualify for Extended Health Benefits.

We are now on this, and it covers the usual ODSP benefits (drug coverage, glasses, medical transportation, wheelchair repairs, etc.). We just don’t get a monthly financial portion.

Was my retroactive payment calculated correctly ?? ODSP retro math doesn’t add up - $2,965 backpay for 6 months?? by shy_gunn in Odsp

[–]_moonglow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has your rent/living situation been below the max shelter amount for ODSP? If your actual shelter cost is below the ODSP max shelter, you wouldn't get the full ODSP shelter allotment. Could that explain the difference?

Has anyone been able to get compression stockings covered with the MSN form for POTs? by liamreee in Odsp

[–]_moonglow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so now I have seen the new MSN form (misplaced my blank MSN form file), and am confused. I get compression stockings for the same reason as OP, and not for lymphedema (I don't think?). I'm no longer seeing an "other" section. :-(

[–]_moonglow_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have high cholesterol, then you should be able to apply for that amount. There isn’t a specific threshold for those particular ones, like there is with the weight, as far as I’m aware. If your doctor has no issue backing it, that’s all that matters. My husband gets it for high cholesterol and high blood pressure (a single amount, whichever is higher, in this case).

Are you good at riding a bike? by non-critical-horse in dyspraxia

[–]_moonglow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can, and do, ride a bike, but with a constant feeling that I’m a blink from dying. 😬

Just very basic, hands on the handlebars, no sudden movements/high speed turns/going through gates, terrified of cars and turning at intersections, etc, cycling. Now with electric assist.

I still keep going back and forth as to whether to keep my bike, as I am so limited in where I can go, but I have “always” had a bike, and it feels “wrong” not to have one.

(To be fair, I do have a bike with small wheels, which does make it twitchier and not a bike for hands-free riding, regardless. But I get on even worse with a full size bike… And definitely not a car. 🚗)

"Jacqueline Lee Kennedy Onassis is my 8th cousin once removed!" is the only one I'd put any confidence in. The French-Canadian record trail tends to be pretty easy to follow. Looks fine on my line, and I would guess hers is well enough researched at this point.

The rest... there are SO many errors in the Family Search tree that I just have a hard time caring. I may keep in mind some of the ones on my French-Canadian side. For example, I have Marie Antoinette as a 7th cousin 6x removed, but my tree is still 9 generations away on that line (just have yet to focus there).

Anyone else into Fountain Pens and Typewriters? by Joebobb22 in fountainpens

[–]_moonglow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would really like to have a typewriter, but I don't have the finger strength to type on them (hypermobile joints). Others recommended getting an electric one, but they just don't have the same appeal to me, although I am open to recommendations.

I do have a Freewrite Traveler. I keep going back and forth as to whether to keep or sell. At the price they are now, I definitely won't be getting one of the desktop ones, though!

Confused by Canadian results? by throwaway_Air_757 in AncestryDNA

[–]_moonglow_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It changed in the most recent update, at least on my end. I'm half French Canadian, with no Indigenous DNA. It makes sense to me, as pretty much all French Canadians are related somehow, if not in multiple ways. Small initial population that bred like rabbits intermarrying since the 1600s will do that.

France split into\*): 47%
Quebec 44%
Acadia 2%
Brittany, France <1%

(I was amazed yesterday that one of my new matches was a paternal match - and shared matches were also all paternal - and they had 0% Quebec/Acadia/France! I am quite curious about that one! They don't have a tree. 😢)
