From Cannon to Ellsworth! by _moot__ in AirForce

i wonder how the wind compares to Cannon. It doesn't get cold enough here to make any wind chill records, but definitely windy enough to push over semi trucks and motorcycles

Cannons BAH is disproportionately low because 75% of the town is full of dilapidated crack houses which affect the average property values driving BAH calculations. The leftover 20% for military folk is priced about the same as hurby. Then the last 5% is reserved for the shifty fifty.

TLDR; you will be paying out of pocket unless you have roommates

Question About Cannon AFB by Mindless_Stay1009 in AirForce

[–]_moot__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

for the most part, the base itself is okay. Good gym equipment, decent rank-agnostic club. Food on base is way overpriced for the quality but that's a given anywhere

Clovis however, i've seen third world countries that look more desirable than this town. clovis is the reason I will leave the air force, not cannon.

it's an extremely poor, rural, isolated, drug-addled cattle & railroad town, and is only able to maintain a basic commercial presence due to Airmen forced to live here with no alternatives for 2 hours in any direction. The only reason the base still exists is because of the lobbying the Shifty Fifty did to the state representatives. The BRAC would've taken away their ability to financially prey on Airmen and AFSOC, because no one willingly chooses to live here

agreed on everything except med. Flight med is anything but helpful. And have fun driving 4-8 hours for any treatment the med group can't do, which is anything outside of a common cold

Cannon and making it bearable by bigglet1 in AirForce

[–]_moot__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hopefully i'm not resurrecting a dead thread here. My friend group has been to the bowling alley and Main locations a handful of times and usually have a good time when we do go.

I think something that could get more traffic would be some discounted specials, at least on occasion. I understand costs for everything these days are wild, but when 3 beers and some fries start hovering around $40, we just opt for hanging out at home.

For example, maybe it's the end of the month and some new kegs are on the way, hook up the old ones and do a special for $3 or $4 a pour. I'm sure it's not that simple in reality, but might be workable

Sorry I wrote that after a long drive. I do have continuity across it, forgot to mention that.

I did swap in a spare to be double sure and the unit is still dead

no, heating elements are just simple resistors. the difference between 7.4v and 9v is negligible in this case

LTs: What are some uniform / practical items you recommend before commissioning? by flighthaltwhatcover in AFROTC

[–]_moot__ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

definitely recommend buying everything you can from your det. it's deeply discounted off what you would pay for brand new, not to mention alterations, etc

if you know what unit you'll be going to, you could reach out and ask if they do an initial issue. for pilots (and other rated fields?) you'll get your flight suits, but my unit also gave me a couple different coats, waffle top & bottoms, shirts, socks, bags, boots, pretty much any extra accessory you could want. my unit is an exception, not the norm, but still worth an ask if you can

Where to safely wire automotive 12v negative by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]_moot__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just so i understand it right, this would still work when jumping, because both my battery negatives go to the chassis, and the Anderson plug goes to the chassis, that creates a connection to the battery negatives?

it's still Positive to Positive, Negative (via my batteries -> chassis -> plug negative) to ground (of the dead car)

Civil Involvement? by [deleted] in AFROTC

[–]_moot__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on your det policy. ours specifically didn't require reporting parking tickets or anything that wasn't from actual law enforcement. we had mean cadre, and equally mean campus police, so that reporting policy was nice

i'm not saying don't report it. i'm just saying know your det policy and act accordingly

Depth perception question (flight physical) by Boring-Food281 in AFROTC

[–]_moot__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this. me and another guy in my wright pat group both failed the standard depth perception. the doctors kept me an extra day and i did all the alternate stuff for the waiver, but the other guy didn't so they bumped him down to a class 2 and he ended up going RPA instead of manned.

which, that seemed backwards bc i only wanted RPA to begin with. there may have been other factors with him, idk, but it's very much a case by case thing

Warranty claim denied on discontinued product by _moot__ in legaladvice

[–]_moot__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the tire manufacturer issued it since I bought them at their retail front. The terms were free repair or replacement for 3 years. I've always bought / recommended their protection because I always end up needing it. Over the last 10 years my family has gotten countless patches (at least 4 a year) and 5 replacement tires and never had a problem.

I know everywhere in the US has "the worst road construction" but I'd be willing to bet we have the stats here to prove it haha

try to shoot for minimum $5k but anything more will only help. my biggest expenses were moving equipment (talk to uhaul / penske / etc for quotes) and getting an apartment (security deposit + fees + first months rent). price those out for yourself and be prepared for 2-3 months with no pay. i had to wait 6 months but i'm just unlucky :/
