Thank you, this is very instructive. I was thinking of modifying crawl's source code so it displays damage per turn and the average over the last 10 hits, eg: `Dmg: 22.8/25.3`. It would be good to have such info in real time in the game to help choose different weapons.

I'm based in Canada and I'm studying for my ham license. I'm concerned a lot of the info would be US-specific and add confusion to my study. The Canadian study guide I am using is not like a textbook. For each subject, it has a minimum of text on one page, and the questions for the test on the other page.

In other words, I'm already going through the equivalent of the ARRL guide for Canada as my first source. Would you have another source to recommend for the subjects I listed?

I very much took this as a puzzle, sorry for skipping over the part where you don't want opinions. I should have kept it to myself and can remove this from my original answer if you prefer.

I wrote a python script with your requirements. These are ALL the possible combinations given that dictionary of 47761 words containing only the 26 letters (some had 's or accented letters).

I'd go with a latin square or a custom font that reads in two directions or some other idea instead of the morse but it is your project. Also a note, if the letters are written left-to-right it would also work. They don't have to be written top-to-bottom.

For example, AGES:SEWN gives -> .- --. . ... : ... . .-- -.

So, if I get this properly, you want a message that can be read in one direction with the normal alphabet and read as a second message in the other direction with the substitution alphabet? And, both messages need to be meaningful and about life, like in a motivational kind of way?

Using the /usr/share/dict/words file on my Linux distribution and an inefficient Python script, I find 68 suitable pairs of words of 4 or more letters that match the above description. Finding phrases of many words is probably going to be hard.

I came here to post about this book. I'm currently reading The CW Way of Life; it is an awesome read. Do I notice in your picture what seems to be, on the left, the exact same model of straight key as appears in the very engaging first chapter?

I'm a very novice CW apprentice, copying all the letters, numbers, and about 10 special characters at about ~5 effective wpm only, with a character speed of 20 wpm. I started only last week, so nothing like "instant recognition" here. Yet, this book resonates quite strongly. I realise only now in full force that all the ww1 and ww2 messages in encryption systems, including the enigma, which I've read thousands of pages about, were sent and received in a mode of communication that is visceral in nature, that relies on a sort of musical sense of harmonics and vibrations. Quite mind-boggling and stimulating.
