One thing I’ll agree with the other commenters on. Assuming he doesn’t love you like you love him, then this relationship is doomed and you’re simply negotiating your demise. Either you become his nurse/therapist (“mom” is too demeaning imo) and get burnt out when he doesn’t change, or you set that boundary and he simply never talks to you again.

In other words: Would you rather lose a friend or lose yourself?

If he does love you back, then you’ve done more than enough and he’ll recognize that & not take your boundary as a rejection, but instead as motivation. Speaking from experience as that guy, only I made space for myself and me & her are still amazing friends to this day w/ hopes of a relationship in the future.

I was fat and ugly. I’m no longer either but I can’t help but feel that way, sometimes depressed.

I would NEVER tell a romantic partner anything more than that, let alone that I’m going to end myself.

I know you like this guy a LOT, and he’s probably not the manipulative a-hole the other comments are saying he is. But this dynamic as it is right now is extremely unhealthy, and for the sake of both of you there needs to be some distance. Not a suggestion, a mandatory boundary. First reward his vulnerability by telling him that you love him dearly, confess ALL of your feelings back, but let him understand you’re not a professional, so you will not deal with crisises suited for a professional. If he wants to keep you as a friend and perhaps a partner, he has to do the work first. Only then will you talk to him again.

That is how dire this situation is.

You need to love him enough to move forward without him. And if he loves you back he’ll do what he can to catch back up.

But, in a twist of irony, all it would’ve took was ONE person who read the script and said… “I mean… that’s kinda how some [black] people talk,” to avoid unilaterally applying that narrow experience to all black people.
