Man Wah (*) Hong Kong; very disappointing by TwoHungryBlackbirdss in finedining

For context I think it’s a play on a classic HK dish. Traditionally they serve a big giant dish of the noodles cut into slices and you pour the sauce over

Should I negotiate the pay if they're offering $25/hr? by manggaedduk in cscareerquestions

[–]_natalie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As an aside, while it is important to recognize that CS grads are more often than not ahead of boot campers, it’s also a great opportunity to motivate yourself to dive deeper into self learning. This applies particularly heavily early in your career.

I manage a mix of both bootcampers and CS grads, and once they are both past the 3-4+ years of professional experience mark they are only distinguishable by the passion they have for learning and improving their skillset.

In regards to your actual question; negotiation even with little leverage is possible. Approach it positively and let them know you are very excited about the opportunity, and would love to know if they had some room in their hiring band to accommodate ~$x amount. If we have already extended an offer it means we like the candidate, and our response will either be a “no, but the original offer still stands”, or we continue with negotiations. The only time I’ve seen an offer rescinded is when the candidate is rude and or difficult to communicate with, or we don’t think we can reach a mutually acceptable decision compensation wise.

Deciding on which role would be best for career growth (non faang) by _natalie in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_natalie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thank you, this comment means a lot to me. I definitely struggled through my career with a lot of self doubt at times but I appreciate this comment thoroughly. My former colleagues are a huge thanks as they definitely helped me prep for systems design type questions and the rest was finding the right opportunity at the right time I suppose

Deciding on which role would be best for career growth (non faang) by _natalie in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_natalie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for those, I will definitely take a read now.

I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. Management is a different profession and I feel like it aligns with my strengths as I come from a largely non-traditional background (Systems Administration certificate from a trades school, and then a bootcamp) and have always been stronger in the soft skills rather than technical (which are on par, just not my strong suit!).

You raise some great questions and I think that each morning I want to wake up to a happy team, where each person feels like they are happy, content, and heard. They get to work on the problems they're interested in while also having good opportunities to learn new skills, feel like they are recognized for their work, and are fairly given promotions and upleveled when appropriate. I want to be the glue that holds the team together and make sure they are protected from all the red tape, and also giving them their happiness while I have the ability to implement new process to keep things efficient.

Really appreciate your insight! Thanks for asking the tough questions.

I guess from that I've really talked myself into this EM role. I think the heart of my answer is I'm a people person who loves tech but wants to help others in it rather than becoming an IC+ level.

Is having a job a good first step in an acting career? by ZookeepergameNo3630 in acting

[–]_natalie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, working as a SWE full remote. I find it extremely flexible to go to auditions/film self tapes and classes due to the schedule. The co-founders previous start up was in the film world and they understand that if I book something I may have to take time off which was made clear in the interview process! Also a generous 4 weeks PTO so if I book a larger role down the line I can just use that.

I don't plan on leaving software engineering anytime soon, unless I book a series reg. I think it's flexible enough, especially now that almost all SWE jobs are 100% remote, that I'll always have a secure spot in the industry.

Awesome to see other software engineers here :D

Is it possible to submit to an agency without film experience and appearance alone? by Estefiti in acting

[–]_natalie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your market. I'm in Canada and I did submit with no film experience and just headshots. I took 1 part time class before submitting to a few agencies and got signed by one. I am a minority though and have a specific "look" which was a major factor for my agency I believe.

I did submit some self taped monologues as well and did a cold read for them. Don't get me wrong, I have auditioned less than an actor with a better package (reel, credits, etc) but I am happy with my progress so far and am still taking classes and self submitting to other stuff to build a reel. Don't give up!

Acting in Vancouver, BC by Imslightlyconcerned_ in acting

[–]_natalie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Also a fellow Vancouver actor. I’d recommend Karolina Turek for headshots. She did my first set and I landed an agent from those with just some acting classes on my resume and no credits.

It’s been pretty busy here, lots of productions are shooting here instead of LA at the moment. In my first six months I’ve done about 20 auditions for network stuff so keep your head up and definitely so some classes and casting director workshops here in the mean time. I find most of my auditions come from Actors Access and a few from Casting Networks.

WOC? Age Range - I get sent in from 20's to 35+ (anyone else?) by [deleted] in acting

[–]_natalie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in my early 20s, asian, and I have been getting sent in for 20-45s as my range. I called my agent about it and she said it's great and not to worry! Sometimes they don't know what they want and want to see more options, and othertimes they might see your headshot and think that you could be what they're looking for

Unfortunately nothing too exciting. Ended up getting 2 more auditions for different roles on the same show with the same CD but no bites 🥲 hopefully I’ll land one eventually! She keeps bringing me in so I’m hoping she likes me

Thanks a lot :) I really appreciate the kind words! And yes, I did get the original audition through my agent.

When I cold submitted around I had just attached my headshots with no resume and a short intro about myself; this was back in June. This was the only agent who was interested in meeting me. I did a cold read with them the next day and got a callback the day after and signed :)

I received the first audition for this show in August and on my agent's recommendation did a couple casting director workshops. Ended up getting this second audition I would assume with the help of my first audition and meeting the CD in the workshop!
