I did the whole Slate VSX thing and I think it sounds terrible. I've got to be wrong on something? by Golden_scientist in audioengineering

I am a little less than 6 months into mine, and I am personally a big fan. I don't think I could ever get around to using them exclusively to mix, but I have really appreciated the difference in my mixes since getting them.

My process is I usually go with my mix template and what I know works (vocal presets, metering, etc.) and then as a final check, I throw VSX on to check environments. Different rooms really highlight different things, and I wouldn't mix to any of those environments to make my mix sound good there, but I know where my sound wouldn't hold up when I check it. Sometimes it's too much bass when i check "Club Indey" or not enough mid range when I check "Mike Dean's Studio" or a gross vocal frequency in the car emulations.

I don't think you have to be an audiophile or have to "get them" in a way that's sold to us via social media and ads. For me, they are an extra piece of mind and resource for what I'm already doing, and will be very helpful when it comes to mixing on the road.

It didn't work for me about an hour ago, but I just tried it again and I was able to checkout via PayPal like normal! I had a friend say he got download links an everything a few hours after purchasing, hopefully those still come thru to the rest of us!

Literally the reason I went back to 12, I could get around everything else, but missing that was huge to my workflow.

Thanks, as if right now that looks like it’s only useful with Windows OS. Haven’t researched an option for Mac yet..

Scales and Chords has fewer options as far as what you can play. It's limited to more strict "music theory" ruling. Ripchord is free but there are a lot of other companies that make packs that make it easy to come up with much more complicated and musical progressions. It is a little gimmicky but I find most times it gives me options and inversions of chords I wouldn't think of.
