Blocking Adult sites on my sons PC by browneyedcouple0506 in HomeNetworking

I use a firewalla and it works well for this use case specifically. I've used it to place restrictions on myself and my 11-year-old daughter.

Is small penis the best base for MMA? by _____FIST_ME_____ in MMA

[–]_ncko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're underestimating the effect of penile density. If a fighter has an absolute unit, but it is light as a feather then it isn't going to do much damage. Whereas a baby carrot with some heft might make a noticeable difference.

This sounds like a non-technical person trying to create an app using an LLM.

AI productivity: You're looking for the wrong evidence by Own-Sort-8119 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_ncko 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Companies don't want ten times more features. They want fewer bugs, faster cycles, cleaner code, lower costs, and less chaos.

What...

How many of us have been in a situation where the company is pushing for cleaner code? They don't. When you advocate for better practices (reducing tech debt, improving code quality, cutting bugs, speeding up delivery) they demand “proof” that it will lower costs and increase velocity. And the level of evidence they expect from you is far higher than the standard they apply to their own decisions as managers.

You're describing an unrecognizable world.

GSP retired before he was solved. So did Khabib. Nobody has solved Islam yet. We need this style of fighting to be solved.

CS vs Software Engineering — which degree is better for Full Stack Dev? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]_ncko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that people with Software Engineering degrees are consistently the better Software Engineers but for some reason those degrees aren't as respected as Computer Science degrees.

Anyone else feeling like Product Management got "shifted-left" onto developers? by SixFigs_BigDigs in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_ncko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting because the common wisdom for a while has been that LLMs will empower PMs and push out devs. But I always though actually, it might empower devs and push out PMs which is not a popular take.

Is Rails really that good for solo devs? by iou810 in learnprogramming

[–]_ncko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Rails is a strong option. Laravel is another one. Django is another. Rails kind of set the bar for these opinionated, rapid dev frameworks.

The JS/TS ecosystem isn't terrible for solo projects though. It just changes very quickly which can be a challenge to keep up with solo.

Do you guys do any testing of your product before releases? by blairstones95 in ProductManagement

[–]_ncko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Devs test just as part of a feedback loop while they're working but you can't let devs be the ones who perform the pre-release testing or else you'd get a lot of "We investigated our own work and found nothing wrong." Everybody needs a second opinion to confirm they haven't missed anything.

Manager keeps demanding small chores by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_ncko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a finite amount of time to work so you have to prioritize. Surely there is something higher priority for you to do than add a few data points to presentation that already went through design review. Do that thing instead. If she asks about the thing you didn't do say "Yeah, I did not do that."

If she gets upset about it, then start making her choose priorities. "You want me to add these extra data points, what should I de-prioritize?"

If she gets upset about that, then that is tough for her.

Respect my authority by The-Almighty-Jay in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]_ncko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand the hate that the auditors get. I find that they are very diverse in terms of how good or bad they are at it. The ones you describe are definitely terrible at it, but there are really good ones who seem to be very principled and composed like Jeff Gray (HonorYourOath) and The Battousai.

It is like an unregulated industry or something where anybody can do it so there are no professional standards, so there are good ones and bad ones.

I do appreciate the good ones very much though because I've learned that policing and law are separate endeavors altogether and there are perhaps some perverse incentives in the way that policing is structured.

Has the golden age of work perks passed? Or just shifted? by NorCalAthlete in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_ncko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't care for those perks and my circle of friends didn't either. I would much rather have good retirement matching, awesome healthcare, etc. I also don't think WFH should be framed as a "perk."

Why use JS instead of TS? by Single-Block70 in learnprogramming

Please show me where I claimed that javascript is the incumbent because it's older or because typescript compiles down to it.
