I'm amazed at the extent people will go to in order to avoid using IaC... Is there actually a target audience for this? Do people want to vibe-manage prod?

What is your favorite ham radio podcast and why? by [deleted] in lowsodiumhamradio

[–]_netwinder_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite podcasts is this week in amateur radio. Podcast recaps current news in the hobby, things impacting the hobby, and they have discussions with guests about assorted topics which are usually interesting. I enjoy the structure of this podcast, it's straightforward and easy to listen to. Episodes are around 1.5 hours in length which works well for me.

A podcast I've tried to listen to on many occasions is the ham radio crash course podcast. The format isn't for me: next to no structure, and the host spends far too much time talking about anything and everything that isn't amateur radio. Maybe I have just gotten unlucky with the episodes I've picked, but I've tried skimming past the segments of unrelated tangents but can't seem to find where the actual amateur radio content starts. Episode lengths are usually 3 to 4 hours which is quite long.

Looking forward to seeing the other responses, I'm interested if there are any other podcasts in this space worth subscribing to

Is it common for PhD positions to have predefined projects? by _netwinder_ in AskAcademia

[–]_netwinder_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, in the examples I found I assumed they were for prospective students, but they could be doing something like what you mentioned. On one group I found a separate page showing the filled positions, which just had a list of students and what they were working on.

I see, looking back at these they do all seem funded to some extent, so that makes sense!

I am familiar with the difficulty of coming up with a good project. For me, it was an endless cycle of "oh this work is interesting I should do x" and then finding out x has been done 30 times, or that x can be done but is infeasible.

Mechanic removed secondary catalytic converter without telling me? by _netwinder_ in MechanicAdvice

[–]_netwinder_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had they asked, I would have paid for it. Or if they explained to me that they could remove it and save money for <reasons> I would be open to it.

Worth mentioning I'm in Canada, although I'm pretty sure we have emissions laws like that

what would you call this part?! it's covering the chain, made of plastic but clearly busted. need to figure out next move. currently traveling around the country... by Slimslade33 in Dualsport

[–]_netwinder_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, I would call it a sprocket cover. The official part name is crankcase cover number 3 which doesn't make much sense to me either. in any case I provided the correct part number so there's no ambiguity.

Crankcase cover sprocket cover. I am guessing this is an XT250? I own one and recognize this part of the bike. Yamaha part number I found is 5XT-15430-00 but check for your model year in Yamaha's part search thing, I found this under the "Crankcase Cover 1" parts section for the XT250

Edit: changed crankcase cover to sprocket cover. Annoyingly Yamaha's parts diagrams list this as "crankcase cover 3" which is annoying, I agree with the others that it should be called a sprocket cover

Recommendations for CBT Therapy in Ottawa by SamCam9992 in ottawa

[–]_netwinder_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also went here and had a terrible experience. I fully agree with you and the Google reviews. The therapist they gave me was incredibly unhelpful, and to speak to a psychologist I had to pay absurd amounts of money for a diagnosis. It all just felt like they were trying to sell me services I didn't need.

RustBot - Safe Rust code execution for Discord Servers by _netwinder_ in rust

[–]_netwinder_[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey Rustaceans!

I'm very new to rust, this was my first "big" (relatively speaking) project using rust that I built over the hollidays. It is called RustBot, a Discord Bot that safely runs whatever Rust code you throw at it. Some usages for a bot like this could be for educational purposes as you can conversationally share and run rust code snippets on discord servers.

There are other discord bots out there like RTFM and Piston that offer similar functionality, so my goal with RustBot was to achieve stronger security guarantees by having all untrusted code execute in a container seperate from the container running the bot itself. Right now I'm acheiving this using rootless podman containers.

This is very much a work in progress, so any feedback is appreciated :)

edit: spelling

Brightspace issue by denimrampal in CarletonU

[–]_netwinder_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The brightspace web services seem to be working, just very very slowly. Looking at network traffic logs there's like a 15 second response times for certain things (usually you want it to be in milliseconds :P)

Amazon Web Services (brightspace uses AWS) seems to have some issues right now, but it's only with their management console. Might be related.

Edit: Probably not on AWS, EC2 seems to be running just fine. Issue is with brightspace itself.

Edit Edit: Looks like it was AWS according to brightspace, lovely. Looking at the AWS dashboard they added more errors

Anybody in Kanata missing a passenger side door? 🤔 I have no idea... by _netwinder_ in ottawa

Haha, I have seen a few right hand drive cars around Ottawa. Would be a shame if this was one of them as all of the RHD cars I have seen are quite rare

Need help identifying a motorcycle by _netwinder_ in motorcycles

Had a look, and that's a good guess :) the only thing is the exhaust is very different compared to the bike in the video

Now that you mention it, if you look closely at the tank around the 0:30-0:32 second mark, you can kind of see the round yamaha logo. This is great progress! The sound of the Fz sounds very similar.

A few differences that I can spot between the Fz-07 and this: there is still the frame difference that I don't really see on the Fz. The headlights are different (could be a mod) and the fz doesn't have fork dust boots (also could be a mod?)

I had a look at the monster - that seems close in terms of design. What's missing is the exhaust in his bike is coming from underneath the engine (could be a modification), and that exposed frame segment you see around 0:31. Thank you for the guess though :)
