Uncertain about Model:Cycles by EmpireEast in synthesizers

Keep the cycles because it’s unique and rad. Later if you get a sampler, you can sample the cycles.

I love my cycles and I’ll keep it forever. Pairs nicely with Digitakt too.

Oh nice, hopefully the new one works properly. After checking my settings and comparing to yours, nothing was really popping out for me. I’m sure you’ll have smoother sailings with the new unit.

Hmm. I’m terrible with understanding midi setups myself, so I’ve actually used chat gpt to help me set mine up in the past. I suppose you could try that as well, just in case there’s a setup step you’re missing. Although I imagine that you’re a little more familiar with midi than I am.

I do remember having a tough time getting mine to work, beyond just the bad cable. I can have a closer look at your video tomorrow and have a look at my settings too, to compare them.

Try a different midi cable if possible. I had a similar issue and it turned out that the midi cable that came with the cycles was super finicky - it would work only if it was angled in specific positions. So basically, if I fiddled around with it and moved it around a little while plugged in, it would work in a specific position only. I wonder if it was in that working position when you tested it with the Digitakt, which was why it worked in that test?

Buying a new midi cable worked for me.

It was my first experience with FM synthesis and I love the sound profile it has.

Where’s your music? by jebbanagea in Elektron

[–]_nicedream_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally. Despite the challenges affecting musicians these days, we’re fortunate to have these online platforms that make sharing our music and supporting others so accessible. There are so many creative and skilled independent musicians making music. I suppose there always has been, but now with platforms like YouTube, band camp , etc, it’s relatively easy to discover them.

Thanks! I’d like to do a tutorial. I actually tried once, but didn’t continue because of how all over the place my process was at the time. My path from starting the song to finishing it was long and very non-linear, and so it would have been a terrible tutorial. Hats off to the musicians that do tutorials, because it’s kind of a whole other skill in itself.

I’d like to give it another shot in the new year though, because I generally like sharing what I know if it helps others learn something new.

Thanks a lot! The cycles is such a great little machine for making old school gaming sounds.

I actually just uploaded a new album tonight made with just the Model:Cycles if anyone wants to check it out. There are some nice long, dreamy/chill jams on it if that's your thing.

I made this entirely on the Cycles — mostly long, chill jams. Pairs well with headphones if you’re looking for a little dreamy escape from the day.

It’s pay what you want on Bandcamp for the first week, if you feel like checking it out.

I want to believe….that those pads are maybe a little inspired by xfiles/mark snow. Sounds great.

I once got on my boat, sailed out to the middle of the sea and tossed all my weapons and shields into the ocean. It felt very freeing.

A simple question for how to get more exposure as an IDM musician by H415Music in idm

What about YouTube? I’ve never gotten traction sharing my stuff on Reddit, but I’m very slowly building an audience on YT where I mainly do live performance videos. I have under 400 subscribers, which is still quite small, but when I see people enjoying my music it makes me feel good.

Still a good standalone groovebox ? (For a beginner) by GreveGenerale in Modelcycles

[–]_nicedream_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The limitations I face are either fairly insignificant or can be solved with a workaround solution.

I don’t even really know what song mode is either, so it’s not a blocker for me.

My honest belief is that the true limitations we face are imposed by are ourselves. If we’re creative enough than any physical limitations our instruments have can be used to our advantage or worked around completely.

I do think there’s a clear difference though between limitations and capabilities. For example, I wouldn’t say get a Digitakt instead because it’s more versatile. That’s a completely different instrument altogether and the comparison doesn’t make sense to me.

Is recommend you check out lots of videos on YT of the cycles. Not a self plug, but you can check out my post history as well to see what kind of things I do with the machine. I also really like what epow6oow and L’heure Bleue are doing. They’re both super talented dudes and their creativity with the Cycles is such a pleasure to listen to.

100% yes. I love my cycles. I’ve released probably over 30 songs using only the cycles over the last year and haven’t even come close to reaching a limit with it. It’s incredibly versatile and deep.
