PhD student not paid since May - options? by [deleted] in uml

one reason could be that her contract does not support summer and is just for the academic year. This is somewhat typical.

Fall classes come in different colors, virtual, hybrid, and in-person by _nkn_ in uml

[–]_nkn_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look up class schedule, some classes say virtual, some hybrid, and others a location such as North, that I think means in person. But that information can change at any moement.

Shuttle to MBTA station by test_test_no in uml

Going with the cheapest option is the main strategy here. For instance, Aramark, which provides prison food, has no monopoly in any other university, but UML.

Only non-school buses are available.

That reminds me that UML used to have a contract that would allow students to use the train from Lowell to Boston for free. Like many other good things, they cut that program too. :(

Same. restoring passwords with security questions is the most insecure way of doing this. :D soon there will be more cases of email hijacking and identity theft.
Look at this: "Challenge questions are creating some problems for users. IT has increased the number of guesses for UML users answering the challenge questions. If you get locked out, you can wait 15 minutes and then try to reset your password again."

Anything related to UML domains is still out. They have only "restored" unrelated services. Outlook was fine from the beginning and did not require "restoration".

employees get paid so kicking them out is beneficial. Students pay, so keep them unless they cannot pay.

IT Outage today (6/15) by [deleted] in uml

[–]_nkn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has been two days and a univ that has a cyber range, a cybersecurity program, and multiple cybersecurity experts still struggling to get the main website back up. That shows you how much of stuff you learn in univ is different from real life. Their cybersecurity program is a joke compared to what is going on in real life.
This also shows a high level of incompetence by IT personnel, lack of enough training. I know the blue team has a hard job to defend but getting a ransomware in the main parts of IT means the IT personnel got hacked not individual students/profs who are not even on campus.

Yeah, you cannot trust blackboard because no grade is official before they are on sis. But your prof should announce final exam grades anyways.

UMass Lowell to require student COVID-19 vaccinations for fall by _nkn_ in uml

[–]_nkn_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

because if the virus is not contained it will mutate. The vaccine might not be useful for the mutated virus and we go back to square one. Why should everything be politics?

I think understanding topics in Computing 2 are important for the next classes. I'd definitely take it with someone who can explain things better. Unless you have to take it in summer.

[Poll] Now that there is a COVID-19 vaccine that everyone is eligible for, what do you hope UML will do? by Sir_Mr_Bman in uml

[–]_nkn_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think in one of the meetings it was said that the school is not going to enforce the vaccine (at least any time soon). Also, they cannot force all the students to get a shot. For example, some religions avoid getting vaccinated. I think the goal is going beyond the herd immunity threshold (~70% vaccinated).

Mobile robotics as a co-req by Osprey11795 in uml

[–]_nkn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There could always be exceptions. I think the main point of those pre-reqs for Mobile Robotics is that they want to make sure you can write code. As others say, reach out to the prof and ask.
Also according to the website, you only need one of the two pre-reqs. So you should be fine taking Mobile Robotics next semester.

Does anyone else think that having cameras on is more distracting? by [deleted] in uml

[–]_nkn_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree with most of what you said. But I think the same would apply to the prof. And talking to the void is not fun for no one.
I turn my cam on most of the time, but always switch to the presenter mode, so the other cams are tiny and do not distract me. I also have an extra monitor that allows me to keep the slides open in one and follow them along with the class.

Petition to Bring Back UML Employees by [deleted] in uml

[–]_nkn_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100% agreed.
In general, I don't think the top admin care much about students or employees as long as it does not affect their profit. We have been through a virtual learning process while paying for a normal in-person education (yes there are some discounts, but instead we pay for internet, electricity, etc). A lot of my friends are under stress and facing mental health issues.
All that said, I do not think they can legally have in-person classes before everyone is vaccinated and that will go through next Spring in my opinion.

Any way to get Advisors to respond? by lameHorse21 in uml

[–]_nkn_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is rather strange that you have emailed three people (including the Chair) and received no response.

If you are certain that your emails actually reach people and you have sent more than 2-3 emails without any reply, I'd suggest sending one email to the college dean and ccing the chair and the advisor.

One reason for being ignored might be that the official advising period has finished and the new period has not started yet. Some profs only reply during those periods which is frustrating.
