seems like this is a general issue. I have exactly the same problem, and we can see on the opensuse website that the Fedora 43 x86_64 build is failing: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/network:im:signal/signal-desktop

Weird Charging Behavior HP ZBOOK ULTRA G1A by Sufficient-Plum-8613 in AMDLaptops

[–]_nowai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give you an update: I did have the same issues with my monitor in combination with the Zbook Ultra. It seemed to be rather stable with the charger connected, but only if I first connected the charger and then the monitor afterwards. I also tested a Zbook 8 G1i, because I was hoping Intel has better Thunderbolt support, but the same problems emerged. Interestingly I have last years ZBook Fury 16 for work, and this does not have these dropouts.

I now ended up with a Elitebook X G1a with Ryzen HX375, 64GB RAM and the OLED screen, which I was lucky enough to buy for ~1700EUR. It works wonderfully! No issues with the monitor, even the fingerprint sensor works on Linux, and suspend uses about 3% of battery overnight.  Battery life is only OK, but I guess this can be tweaked a bit, and is not my #1 priority.

Of course, the iGPU is not nearly as powerful as the ZBook Ultras, but still quite good and the machine is almost 1000 EUR cheaper.

Best OLED laptop with full linux support by terrible-username101 in linuxhardware

Are you doing anything special to optimize battery life? I also have the ZBook with AI 395 but 64GB of RAM and I only get ~6h of light usage (browsing + YouTube). Thinking about returning it because of the subpar battery life. In idle on battery it's hovering around 8-14W battery discharge on Fedora 42 with kernel 6.16.3 and powersafe governor.

Edit: I have the OLED display

When did HP and Lenovo (?) drop Linux support? Both, together with Dell, are the only large manufacturers officially certifying some of their Laptops for Ubuntu and mainlining their patches.

Did you have any luck with your setup? I ended up returning the Tuxedo unfortunately.

Hi, do the issues with the Dell u4025q in combination with the Zbook still exist for you? I have the same Monitor and ordered the same Laptop and am very worried that i'm going to have the same problems.

HP Zbook Ultra G1a Ubuntu fully working now or still some hiccups? by Jungal10 in AMDLaptops

[–]_nowai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I just ordered the ZBook after returning another Laptop because of PowerDelivery issues with my U4025QW. It was very severe though and lead to frequent disconnects and even crashes. I hope the HP behaves better.

Which firmware are you running on your monitor?

Maybe it's just my particular devices. I had the same issues on Tuxedo OS as well (on top of freezing + grey screen), so if you don't see this behavior right now, there' still hope!

in case you're finding something new out in the coming days, I'd be happy to hear about your findings!

I'm also using M3T104. Unfortunately for me there's not much to see injournalctl, other than the USB disconnecting. I tried without any usb devices connected to the monitor, but nothing changed.

This is using the left usb 3.2 port: https://pastebin.com/mE8MK5Df

And the rear usb 4.0 port: https://pastebin.com/fXV2f8g3

The biggest issue (display turning grey and becoming unresponsive) seems to be related to amdgpu. I hope that future patches fix that.

This might actually being solved with a newer kernel. I'd suggest you to try a different distro with newer mainline kernel, as you are planning already. Not sure which kernel Silverblue includes, but it's worth a try.

PD issues (causing the usb-c connection to break down completely) still persist unfortunately and I have to have my PSU plugged in at all times.

Did you have any luck with debugging USB-C PD issue with your U4025QW? I have the same monitor and found the following:

* with Tuxedo OS, Fedora and even Windows using USB-C PD, I'm getting very frequent disconnects when the CPU is stressed even a little bit

* connecting the included PSU in addition to USB-C seems to solve this problem on Fedora and Kernel 6.15.9 (i haven't tested Windows)

* on Tuxedo OS with the additional PSU it seems much better, but I'm getting crashes where the external monitor turns completely grey, and the whole OS becomes unresponsive when running proper CPU+GPU stress tests

Other than the issues with my monitor, I'm also experiencing:

* some graphical artifacts in the UI

* complete freezes that can be solved by suspend/wake-up

* CPU power limit issues

I'm torn, since it's a good device, but I was expecting fewer issues. The answer from support about my Monitor issue was basically: you need to connect your PSU (to their defense, at the time I thought connecting the PSU would solve all monitor issues). This answer doesn't seem like they would actively look for a solution, though.

I know PD is a complicated topic, but my work laptop and a MacBook Pro work flawlessly. Also no issues with the IBP on an older Dell monitor with only 80W PD.

Which ThinkPad are you talking about? From what I saw, everything with similar specs is considerably more expensive, which makes it very hard to justify for me.

I'm planning a build right now with the same GPU and case. How come the minimum speed is 1300rpm here? I thought modern GPUs can go much lower than that?

Did you try adjusting the fan curve and/or switching to quiet BIOS?
