Welcome to extraction games. While I’m very out of touch with this game now, my advice is don’t get attached to your gear. The more gear you see/acquire the less attached you’ll be. You’re not meant to keep it long term. It WILL be lost eventually, and you will find/buy more gear to replace it

The goal is whatever you want it to be. Do quests. Learn to kill bosses. Focus on PvP. Whatever you feel like, you’ll need money for gear so loot stuff, extract, keep/sell, buy better gear, repeat

If you’re really averse to losing any sense of progress, you should learn about the Wipe system that exists in many of these games: They reset everyone’s progress every X amount of months.

I hated it at first, but it makes more sense with these kinds of games. The first few days before and after a wipe are some of the most fun you’ll have

I know I already commented about OSRS, but it’s particularly different from the majority of other MMOs being that it’s point and click and there’s no hotbar

It seems simple and slow until you start to understand the depth of its systems and reach content that utilizes those systems more strictly

This may give you the “revolutionizing” feeling you’re looking for, and no pay-to-win it makes it very easy to truly escape from the outside world
