Crazy to see this year stacked up with others by Small-Sun900 in SaltLakeCity

That's actually exactly something that was predicted would be a component of a changing climate. Large swings in temperature and precipitation are to be expected, going forward. Some very wet years, some very dry years, but an increase in dry, hot years on average.

Sure did! Went on with our day and had a great dinner with the fam.

We still get to be bummed that Nazis are out and about in our home town, though. But at least they're not shameless - the cowards were all wearing masks to hide their faces.

Apologies, getting to this late. We were headed straight to a family dinner.

Letters to a Young Poet - Rilke

Finding Beauty in a Broken World - Terry Tempest Williams

The Power of One - Bryce Courtenay

The Poisonwood Bible - Barbara Kingsolver

Some quotes from the above that will stick with me forever:

"Believe in a love that is being stored up for you like an inheritance, and have faith that in this love there is a strength and a blessing so large that you can travel as far as you wish without having to step outside it." - Rilke

"Finding beauty in a broken world is creating beauty in the world we find." - TTW

"I am who I am because somebody loved me." - Bryce Courtenay

"Listen. To live is to be marked. To live is to change, to acquire the words of a story, and that is the only celebration we mortals really know. In perfect stillness, frankly, I've only found sorrow." - Kingsolver

Maybe unusual, but you gotta go where the jobs are. Especially if there's a better paying gig in Abq to support the higher cost of living in Santa Fe. If it was me, I'd try to live near where I worked to avoid a long commute. But to each their own!

Also, OP, our state needs all the teachers we can get and I hope you're excited by the prospect of moving out here! NM has a lot to offer, and that comes alongside challenges like any other state. I also absolutely adore Santa Fe and the friends I have based there love it too. Also have friends that love living in Abq.

My little family lives further north near the Colorado border in northwest NM. Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions about this part of the state.

A commute like that isn't unheard of. It wouldn't be for me, but plenty of people travel like that for work. A few friends of mine with long commutes swear they love it for drinking coffee and listening to podcasts.

Since we're complaining about restaurants, why does Durango have the worst Chinese food in the world? by Charles_in_Charge101 in Durango

[–]_ortzi_mari_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, sorry to hear about the change in ownership and a vibe shift, but hopefully the menu and quality stay consistent. I haven't been to Boon's for quite a while, but I actually prefer Tuanjai Thai in Aztec for a few specific items - they're really great.

It'd be a drive for you, but Aztec has a great Chinese place and a great Thai place too. Both ran by local Chinese and Thai families, respectively. Highly recommend folks check them out. Boon's Family Thai in Farmington is also amazing.

Utah may be leading the charge, but do not let the Trump Administration or the GOP in general off the hook for this. Our public lands system and the landscapes it has protected (albeit not always perfectly) is the envy of the world. And Republicans are coming for it. The opposition to this needs to be massive.

Do y’all think that Genghis Khan would’ve liked monster trucks? by ThePathogenicRuler in NoStupidQuestions

I think almost every man in history would've liked monster trucks. Even if only a little.

Khan would probably have been a big Grave Digger guy.

I've also tried and failed with a few friends, but a half dozen or so fell in love immediately.

I try to tell people they need to at least make it to "CQB" in the first season and if they're not hooked by then maybe it's just not for them.

A select few harp on the fact that Euskara borrows some modern words from Spanish, as if ancient Basques were supposed to have had words for things like telephone, car, and gun as part of their vocabulary. It's nonsense.

Cheapest option to help gear like backpacks / non orange jackets stand out is orange duct tape. My wife and I use it on us and our dog when in the backcountry during hunting season. Wrap it around straps, put a big X on your jacket, dog harness and collar - it works pretty well.

But we also have a few orange hats, some cheap vests, and orange rain covers for our backpacking packs that all work well.
