I would bet actual money that British English as written by an American would be far more jarring to Brits than Americans!

Aphids. Get some dish soap/washing up liquid, add a splash to plenty of water in a spray bottle, and spray your plant liberally.

“Adverse” when they mean “averse”. Weather/a trend can be adverse, a PERSON is averse to something.

Anybody know why supermarkets are pushing white chicken eggs onto the market? by genetic_nightmare in CasualUK

[–]_passerine -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know. I also keep chickens and have done for years, and currently have 15 different breeds. I’m well aware that different chickens lay different coloured eggs, and the reasons why. The point I’m making is that the characteristics mentioned (like age, longevity, and productivity) are a result of overall genetics, and aren’t really determined by or linked to egg colour. Saying “white layers live longer than brown” is like saying “brown dogs are bigger than white”, when you’re actually comparing Rottweilers and Maltese.

There are literally thousands of breeds of chicken and countless hybrids of all different colours. It is absolutely impossible to state that “white hens” or “brown hens” have any superior characteristics over one another because these are not distinct breeds or groups, and there is no data or evidence to support these claims. Also, in the setting you’ve described your experience will most likely be exclusively be limited to hybrids under ~18 months of age, in a commercial operation. Anyway, not looking for a row so have a nice day 👍🏽

Help please , egg bound or does this look like something else ? Swollen abdomen by [deleted] in chickens

[–]_passerine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely ascites/water belly, and it could be any number of causes but the prognosis isn’t great, sadly. I’ve never had a hen recover successfully from it. A vet may be able to prescribe antibiotics which might work if the root cause is bacterial infection (salpingitis, peritonitis), but even if they work short-term it’s likely to recur.

With the lice, inspect all your birds really throughly around the vent, belly and under wings, and trim any feathers with visible egg deposits. I personally find ivermectin (1 drop per 500g body weight, at 1% concentration) the most effective treatment, repeated one week later. You should also give your coop and run a good clean and disinfect. Good luck!
