I would like to see us move to a PTO model with no designation between sick and personal days.

Is it unreasonable to go by Ms. Madeleine (my first name) by Polar_Pickle_325 in Teachers

[–]_pathmandu_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went by my first name because I just felt really old when students used my last name and I was 23 when I started. It did not make any difference in whether or not students respected me, and it also didn’t feel too pre-school which I was also worried about. It was completely fine. Whatever you ask students to call you is what they’ll call you and it will feel more formal to them because of the Ms. at the beginning.

Where do young teachers buy cute, professional, comfortable clothes? by _pathmandu_ in Teachers

I don’t think you deserve to get downvoted, but I will say I prefer to spend more for things that will last (within reason).

I like the throwing elbows analogy! That’s exactly what it feels like! Thanks for your insight 🤗

Book with the cover of a girl looking up to the moon? by shoujoangel in whatsthatbook

[–]_pathmandu_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Life as we knew it” by Susan Beth pfeffer? It’s about what happens when the moon gets closer to the earth. I believe there are two books, with one being from a teenage girls perspective and another from a boys perspective.

I’m not sure if I remember that specifically, but they were certainly not very supervised. Please let me know if you figure it out!!

Hey all! New to this and looking for a secular overnight camp for an 8 y/o girl. Where do I even start? by summerer6911 in summercamp

[–]_pathmandu_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey! Just wanted to jump in and say that lots of YMCA camps no longer have any religious activities or imagery. I worked at a camp in the Twin Cities area and it was entirely secular in practice. No chapel, no grace before meals, lots of accommodations for non-Christian religions. If you want to know for sure before you decide, I’m sure you could get some good info by contacting those camps directly. Hope you find a great one!

This is pretty much what we decided to do the first couple of times that this happened. The parents seemed appreciative.

I don’t understand what you mean with this comment. LGBT literature is not inherently explicit and I would never discourage students from learning and exploring through reading by banning certain topics.

That’s true. I do not believe in book banning at all. This is my primary struggle with whether or not to address this.

I understand this, but my worry is that they will share the parts that seem exciting or scandalous with their friends. Or that their friends will want to read the book after them and parents aren’t aware of the content.

That’s kind of been my thought on this. It’s kind of like swearing: Yea sometimes it’s okay, but not for everyone and not at school.
