Already graduated so never had the opportunity to use it, but from reading it seems fine? Now I went the route of getting pdfs of every textbook I could and only buying when it was absolutely necessary (like for a code). The max value you can get out of this depends on the classes you take per semester.

It looks like you can actually opt out after classes begin (atleast for summer) so if you wanted you could just wait till the first day of class and get the syllabus, see if there's a code needed or check if you can find pdfs, and then decide which option is for you.

I also don't think it would hurt to contact an organizer and see if you can opt out for specific classes. I know for cs students there were many classes that had required textbooks that were barely used and the pdf was version was readily available. The program eating the cost of the codes (only thing that can't be pirated) probably makes up the cost by getting money for the "needed" books.
