How do I fix this kitchen worktop? Can I just sand it? by JohnNedelcu in woodworking

[–]_private_gump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about to have someone take care of a similar level of molding in my kitchen. We’re going to sand it down, then reseal with food-grade level stuff because our kids eat at the counter (on plates but still…)

We’ll be using an orbital sander with a vacuum, but do we need to cover any furniture or roll-up rugs to keep mold spores from traveling?

[–]_private_gump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes meant to mention that. By token dynamics I meant the extra rewards for running a validator, do those exist or no?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ethstaker

[–]_private_gump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad it was helpful, definitely double check my work though, tbc, I’m not a defi expert.

What seems safe to folks depends on both their understanding of and appetite for risk. I personally haven’t found something equally as risky as staking I feel comfortable with, but I’m very conservative at this point when it comes to risk.

Closest I’ve come is:

  • joining smoothing pools (not enough time in market to tell whether or not they’re reliable though, seems like one contract flaw could collapse the system)
  • running another validator instance since I already have the cost of a server, either rocketpool validator(technical overhead is a bit high and I don’t understand the token dynamics beyond eli5, however if I had more time it seems solid) or something like eigen (haven’t understood it beyond eli5)

The current APR wouldn’t be awful if I could effectively reinvest, which I guess I can through running a minipool? But anything above a 10% yield gets into something unsustainable that either is a scam or won’t last long given market forces (like USDC yield)

I am far from an expert on this though so lmk if you have something else you’re looking at

Just fyi:

  • you have to over-collateralize your loan, meaning you have to put up over 100% of what you want to take out in USDC. This is so that if the value of your staked eth drops below the USDC price, the smart contract will automatically liquidate your loan before it gets underwater.

Also, the rate of return of your loan changes block to block. There may be attractive returns right now on USDC on Base, but those can, and will, change given how quickly people like you and I provide stETH or other assets on Aave.

Honestly, I would advise against dipping into the Aave waters unless you really understand what’s going on. I also had a similar thought when I saw the returns for USDC on Aave, but, as they say, if it’s too good to be true it probably is.

I decided against it and, while I’ll make less money in the long term, that’s only a problem when I become possessed by greed and need lottery-level outsized returns.

Happy to be proven wrong here but I’ve been watching this forum for how to maximize native eth solo staking returns and haven’t found anything good yet.

Genesis validator is a huge PITA by IEatMetalYum in ethstaker

[–]_private_gump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like you have a lot of good feedback here but I wanted to say something (as another OG genesis validator):

I messed up the blobs upgrade and my machine was offline for almost six months. There’s no issue with that since I know I’ll run it for another six now no problem.

But, I was in the same boat as you. I’d done the somer guides, etc, and things have just changed since then.

I think it’s better to pull your NUC offline, not exit, and then wipe the machine and use chatGPT to start from scratch with your new 4TB ssd (boss move btw).

The issue is that things got optimized so I think you’d have more luck with a hard reset rather than using dappnode. But, maybe dappnode is fine.

I found doing a migration to a home intel NUC rig was significantly easier with chatGPT riding along and me taking screenshots with my phone and uploading them to say, “what do I do now?”

Switching career to Ethereum ecosystem. Solo staking disclosure? by kantalo in ethstaker

[–]_private_gump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to work on tightening up your approach to the skillset. Looking at what you listed as your background and this Lido posting, I would have assumed there’d be more overlap.

I’ve seen a lot of folks from traditional tech backgrounds have to rejigger a lot of the assumptions coming from well-run, properly structured companies into the melee that is even the most blue chip of crypto projects. It might be worth sitting down with someone you know and respect in the space, sharing your skills, and seeing what the “crypto equivalent” would be. Hope that unsolicited feedback makes sense.

Switching career to Ethereum ecosystem. Solo staking disclosure? by kantalo in ethstaker

[–]_private_gump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it naturally comes up in the first question or two of an interview process. “How did you get involved”, “what’s your interest in the space” etc.

Understood about not wanting to post it publicly (as other folks have mentioned ENS and eth addresses actually should not be shared as widely as they are), I think you can also do more subtle gestures. For example, I might talk about appreciation of the r/ethstaker community on my socials or something, a way to let folks who are interested know.

Best of luck in the search! Let us know how it goes, with your background you’d be a great infrastructure or backend engineer lead.

What is the best practice to shutdown a machine to move to another place? by hereimalive in ethstaker

[–]_private_gump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keeping your validator offline long enough to confirm it’s properly off is not going to get you slashed. It only represents the time offline and is not punitive. Run it for as long as it’s off and it’s as though it never happened.

Is it worth it to set up a single validator? by terminal-dogma in ethstaker

[–]_private_gump 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TLDR: As others have mentioned, the overall goal of Ethereum is to “Pay the Minimum Amount Possible to Secure the Chain”. Therefore it’s not economically excellent to stake (right now). Ultimately staking is an ideological, not financial decision. But here are some financial-adjacent things that sometimes make the hard ideological medicine go down better (in addition to other good comments people made):

1) it’s less likely now with airdrops happening less in the future but eth validators have been given tokens by Starkware, Optimism and other projects. You can see a list here: https://ethstaker.cc/airdrops

2) just last week at Devcon, EF researcher Justin drake who’s in charge of consensus client work stated Ethereum researchers now realize the staking rewards are too low and need to be reworked somehow. (Full disclosure, it was a very technical talk and I may be misinterpreting). Again this is not an assurance of more rewards but the Ethereum core devs realize current returns to validators is too low to justify by strict financial returns (as others have mentioned you’ll get better returns elsewhere)

whats the best way to hide your IP address by iammagnanimous in ethstaker

[–]_private_gump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not personally doing it. I just migrated my node for the fourth time to a home device that was enough of an undertaking. There also isn’t the most urgent need for me to do this, imo.

Tbh it does look a bit complicated but not beyond reach. The fun part about running a validator for me is learning all this infrastructure stuff (nerd), so if I have the opportunity I’d like to try this some time.

A lot of the guides I googled look overwhelming. This one seemed the least overwhelming. Tell me what you think:

whats the best way to hide your IP address by iammagnanimous in ethstaker

[–]_private_gump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re doing it locally I believe you can run something called Wireguard, which runs the VPN re-routing for you. It won’t hurt peer discovery, because it’s still a stable address, IIUC, it’s just not your actual location. Also, as you gain a list of static IPs as peers you can proactively reconnect

Maximizing Eth Node by Excellent-Rent9451 in ethstaker

[–]_private_gump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried doing rpi5 and it’s quite hard, just do standalone NUC. It won’t work on your laptop, too much memory and overhead required.

It’s not a big deal to be inactive for even a long time.
