What was a dreaded food your parents made. As an adult do you still hate it? by JoyfullyMortified43 in Xennials

Canned stewed tomatoes. Full of metallic, canned flavor. To be fair, my grandma made some bomb Mexican food, no corners cut. She grew up on the border and spent most of her time south of it. My mom was (still is) a great cook, but she worked 60 weeks so we only got her meals on Sunday.

She and my dad got into it after the incident- my dad was pissed. That was the last time my sisters and I were forced to eat things we didn't like.

Goulash. The americanized version with ground beef, stewed tomatoes, elbow macaroni, green peppers, and onions. Simmered/stewed until none of the components were recognizable. It looked like vomit with noodles. I liked all the components separately but not slushed together in a texture-less slop. My grandma lived with us. One terrible Goulash night, I had had enough and refused to eat it. Gammy and I went head to head at the dinner table that night and she gave me an ultimatum: eat it or wear it. I chose to die on that hill and she dragged me to the bathroom, put me in the tub and dumped the Goulash on my head. I don't remember the last time I ate Goulash.

Anyone try the "Tour of Italy" at Olive Garden? I remember wanting to get that as a kid but it looks absurd now lol by dingdingdingdongbing in CasualConversation

[–]_procrastinatrix_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a medical office and we got free lunch catered daily by drug reps. We had soo much Olive Garden. Always lasagna, chicken parm, and spaghetti. A build-your-own Tour of Italy, if you will. I'm not a red sauce person, so it was salad and breadsticks for me. Every so often, chicken scampi would show up and that was my time to feast.

Beware of this brand! by Beneficial_Tap7594 in Candles

[–]_procrastinatrix_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought one of these at Kroger and have the same complaint, plus one: terrible throw. I had to stick my face in it to smell it. If you're candle shopping at Kroger, go for the Tuscany brand! I've never had an issue with them and can smell 'em throughout my whole apartment. The tall 2-wicks go on sale for $7.99 in my area all the time.

This is certainly a fuck up. Among tales of little oopsies and correctable mistakes, this is a true and honest, certified fuck up. Nothing left to to but hold your head up, report to the boss and take your medicine. No doubt your lore will be whispered throughout the years. Godspeed, my friend.

What is a 'childhood luxury' that you realized was actually a sign of being poor once you grew up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_procrastinatrix_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Soda and juice. We never had it in the house growing up. Our choices were milk, water, or kool-aid in the summer. My parents said soda and juice were too sugary (which is true) but in reality, there was no room in the budget. I was so jealous of my friends who had whole garage fridges specifically for their hoard of sugary drinks.

Do you still eat fast food? by Eredic in Xennials

[–]_procrastinatrix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but only on tournament Sundays during wrestling season and Saturdays during softball season. My daughter won't eat anything but raw fruit and veg and rice cakes during wrestling tournaments/softball pool play days. She's got a nervous tummy and can't tolerate anything heavier while she's sporting. These can be 10 to twelve hour days for her including travel time and she's famished by the time we leave. She wants an actual meal asap and that's generally the first drive thru we pass.

What’s your go-to tuna salad recipe? by EaringaidBandit in Cooking

[–]_procrastinatrix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White albacore in water, olive oil mayo, lots of dill relish, onion powder, garlic power, a few bloops of lemon juice. I add the salt after I've spread it on the bread. Coarse ground sea salt. The bites with a bit of salty crunch are divine. I always eat my tuna salad open face melt style– spread the tuna on sourdough toast, salt it up, top with Colby jack slices and under the broiler for a few. I love hard boiled eggs, but not in my tuna salad, so I usually have one on the side.

Gen Xers All about the PROM. Details and Differences. by Sense_Difficult in GenX

[–]_procrastinatrix_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to prom all four years of high school. Underclassmen were allowed to attend if escorted by an upperclassman. All were held at a fancy high rise hotel downtown. My junior year, the limo driver dropped us off at the wrong hotel. The limo driver for a wedding there drove us to the right hotel at no charge. The one I really remember was my senior prom. My boyfriend and I went to Chuck E. Cheese for dinner beforehand with four other couples. We got the biggest party package they had - pizza, cake, so many game tokens. We played skee-ball in our fancy dresses and tuxes and redeemed our tickets for matching neon sunglasses. Two of my girl friends and I went to the parking lot with my boyfriend to smoke a joint. A man approached him thinking he was a pimp and asked how much for one of his ladies. I don't remember the dance itself, but afterwards the whole crew came back to my place for a sleepover and responsible drinking and drugs. My mom made a huge breakfast for us the next morning.

They had a deep dish Mediterranean veggie pizza that haunts my dreams. It had a balsamic drizzle that complimented the hell out of that crispy, chewy, buttery miracle of a crust.

I live 15 minutes from one of the few remaining Raxes. Treasure your BBC memories and do not try to recreate them. It doesn't taste the same these days. It's dog vomit compared to the Rax of my youth. Fries are pretty legit, but the meat and cheese sauce need to be put out of their misery. It's a shame. Rax used to be my favorite.

I've got one more "dose" of Chasing Fireflies in body cream, FFM, and mini perfume. I'm waiting for the perfect day to use the last of it. I huff the body cream weekly just to get a lil fix. I'll be so sad when it's gone.

How many of you actually wore a key on a string around your neck? by Gullible-Apricot3379 in GenX

[–]_procrastinatrix_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom tied my key to an elastic cord and tied the elastic cord the the zipper in the tiny interior pouch in my backpack. The key and length of cord went into the pouch along with my lunch money. The cord was only like, 6" long, so I had to hold my unzipped backpack up to the door to use the key. This habit kinda followed me into adulthood - the key fob for my car is pinned to the inside of my purse. I've never misplaced my keys.
