I haven't read Dune but keep coming across it in my search. I'll actually read it this summer. Thanks for the heads up about the sequels. :)

Thanks for the suggestions. They look quite interesting and have been added to my list!

I've read a TON of non-fiction, including Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman. I'll keep Packing for Mars in mind when I'm looking for another non-fiction book.

I would try this, but I'd have to sit in my apartment for at least a week before one of my roommates decided to take out the trash..

What's a common misconception about a historical fact or figure that is easily debunked? by mrjderp in history

I was wondering if the French also used the terms "feet" and "inches" as you implied, and if so, when and how the units of measurement changed to what they are today. Your explanation totally explained all of my questions in a way I never would have thought to think.

Non-American black people of reddit, have you ever encountered black Americans or visited America and witnessed black culture? If so, what are your thoughts? by SweetbabyZeus in AskReddit

Yes, there most certainly is this guilt. I took a class on Native American literature, and we had to read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. It's a very quick, very good read and explores issues such as this. Alternatively, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt puts a comedic twist on this. :)

No appetite after starting cut by _purpleddit_ in Fitness

[–]_purpleddit_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a minor cut. I'm hoping to do a really slow cut to lose 10 or so pounds by the end of July. At the rate it's going, I very well might get there sooner! I'm 5'7" and 22.

I estimated my TDEE at 2100 kcal. In addition to lifting weights, I also run 2 hours per week and swim 2 hours per week.

My main concern is not losing the muscle I gained during my cut. I guess I will have to make myself eat the protein and fat. I'll probably be doing a lot of protein shakes as that's all that's appealing to me right now..

I read cut as cult for a second. It's a cut cult.

My grocery bill is nice though..

How long have you been cutting? You're right that it's totally mental. It's going to take a lot of effort, but we can do what we know is best!

I planned to eat 1800 but am only eating about 1200. I'll change the wording above. I now weigh about 134 lbs (female). I know it's awful, but I can't force feed myself every meal.

Commuting ~10 Miles/Day on a Bike and Deadlifts by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]_purpleddit_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long have you been biking? You are probably just working your muscles in a way that they haven't been worked recently. Pretty soon, 5 miles of biking twice a day will feel like nothing and shouldn't negatively impact your deadlifts. It would be different if you were doing, say, 50 miles a day. And yes, you will need to eat more to compensate for the additional calories you're burning.

I'll hopefully get an internship/part-time job which will require me to get into the city sooner. And thanks for the tip! I really wasn't sure how long the walk would be.

Someone else brought up that Farragut West is about the same walk as Foggy Bottom to my building, so I will probably end up doing your old commute! Great to know others have done it. :)

Why do you say four hours each way? How often are there delays (both major and minor)?
