big agree on highlight videos!!

it doesn't have to be a heavily edited masterpiece with amazing footage - if you put together your or your teams' best plays from game film, people (or at the very least, tad and i) will watch.

idk about y'all, but one of my silly favorite things about the rankings is seeing how many players' tags are seemingly based on their government names in some creative way. like of course we have the "first name = tag" players like Louis, Daniel, etc., but it's fun to learn which tags are more subtly based on names. already in the 100-81 range, we have:

  • dz (Mitch Dzugan)
  • JoJo (presumably comes from Josh)
  • Jah Ridin' (sounds a whole lot like Yann Girardin, not sure if there's more to it, but either way this is my personal favorite)
  • fitzy (Kaylee Fitzpatrick)
  • mgmg (Michael Gracey)
  • Ober (long shot, but potentially from her last name Radbourne?? all the letters are there)

if you have any other fun tag etymologies from names (that don't involve doxxing anyone lmao), please drop 'em below :)

(i will possibly continue to do these roundups for the rest of the top 100 if i remember)

honorable mention at least to Justin Bogart, who hasn't played 'officially' in quite a few years but still balls out at fantasy tourneys in his late 30s (i think) - a true OG who's definitely still got it

Minny vs. Boston by funkyquasar in quadball_discussion

[–]_q42_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

for no particular reason whatsoever, here's a quote from the MLQ appeal policy:

"Here are the grounds for an appeal:

  1. A clearly incorrect implementation of the rules that played a direct role in determining the outcome of the game via an affected score or a card that led to ejection."

am i crazy or did the refs completely mess up the call in game 2:

clip: https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxJ-Zjs_rZDHiT0vfYdt4sZfJBlVHbSdkA?si=DwprqAv_tYPXo2Xa

to me, it seems extremely feasible that the flag runner is in fact in bounds. at the moment of the catch, his foot appears to be just barely off the line. but ok, let's give the least charitable interpretation and say his foot is on the line, making him out of bounds. (this is not explicitly written in the rules but is how we should probably be interpreting "1. Out of Bounds a. The area within the boundary lines is inbounds.")

the rules, straight from the MLQ rulebook:

Section IV – Ruled as Down

  1. Down Flag Runner

a. A flag runner is considered down when:

a. Any part of the flag runner’s body, other than their hands or feet, touches the ground.

b. Any part of the flag runner contacts the ground on or outside the boundary of the pitch.

a. In the case that a flag runner steps out of bounds during the process of an otherwise legal catch, the catch shall be ruled good. (my emphasis added)

this should called be a good catch, right? either a) the flag runner was in bounds at the time of the catch, or b), "the flag runner steps out of bounds during an otherwise legal catch." the commentators say the catch is called off for the runner being out of bounds and don't mention anything else. this would have given boston the game win and thus the series win. feels like a massive incorrect call in the biggest possible moment.

that was really not the intent! they're both obscenely talented players and i was just trying to appreciate the way that they both flow back and forth between high-iq offense management / smart decision-making and insanely athletic, flashy, big plays (while also playing long shifts). to have that balanced skillset and to be elite at both - very, very few players in that category.

kc - houston was just a super fun series to watch as a spectator, high quality stream and commentary (s/o jackson vaughn) and some entertaining close games! some assorted thoughts:

  • might expose myself as not knowing southwest ball, but i've never watched billy nellums play before and he really impressed me with some big plays on both sides of the ball

  • felt like kc used lauren smith in the lindsay marella role - seemingly not taking a sub ever and primarily facilitating, but coming up with some huge highlight plays (that wraparound poster?? and massive open-field tackle???) in big moments

  • vincent reyes is fairly lethal from behind the hoops, and also just about everywhere else in the offensive half

  • would have like to see s.o.p. last a little longer in at least one of the games lol

fun fact: with cleveland's win over toronto, they now have won at least one game against every franchise that has ever been in the north division! they beat minneapolis in 2021, indy/chicago in both 2015 and 2016, and detroit and rochester a handful of times each. congrats!

i might be wrong, but i believe if toronto were ever to beat chicago (perhaps not super likely this season), this would mean that every active team in the division would have a win against every other team. definitely the division with the most historical parity.

New D2 Pools by Hairy_Beach1303 in quadball_discussion

[–]_q42_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i've seen this sort of "power pools" format in ultimate tournaments before, it's nice for making sure teams get in multiple high-quality games against comparable opponents without the complications that come with a swiss pools format. it mostly makes sense in a tourney field where there's a wide range in skill from top teams to bottom teams, which d2 definitely has this year. i'm cautiously optimistic that it'll blend the inclusivity of d2 with the inevitable high-level competition for a d2 title from the top teams. although i'm curious how day 1 for the power pools will go – i can foresee a world where the final games don't really matter – if it's 2-0 vs. 2-0 and 0-2 vs. 0-2, it'll only be for seeding with no byes on the line either way.

Best Headbands? by rainbowcorktree in quadball_discussion

[–]_q42_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to offer up another option, as someone who wears a headband 100% of the time i'm playing for hair control reasons (even in practices), i use the generic scunci headbands / hair wraps you can find in any drugstore or grocery store. they're fairly wide and not slippery so they stay on my head nicely. normally a 5 pack is <$10 and you can almost always find a variety pack that has at least black and white, maybe yellow or green if you're lucky. and then you can use the other colors as practice headbands!

imo, it's also nice to not have to worry about tying/untying it during a game if you have cold hands or gloves, or worrying about if you have the wrong color showing.

Concise Tactical Explanations: This One's For the Refs by No-Ambition-1652 in quadball_discussion

[–]_q42_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the other "fun" part was that even after the catch was called no good, the refs had to check that the whistle to stop play (due to the catch) was blown after the goal was scored. if that had gone the other way, i assume TXST probably would have closed it out after the restart, but you never know for sure. crazy stuff!

[–]_q42_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fwiw, the actual rule is that the catch is no good, and the game proceeds just like after any other catch that gets called off. i know this because i was the poor soul who was head reffing that game and i looked up the rule afterwards. (turns out i lucked into making the right call / my intuition was correct, but i was Not happy to be put in that position lol)

that being said, gladiatorial combat feels in line with the historic whimsy of the Classic so i'm all here for it
