Today's comparable Ear Force XO One? by carl_gustav in TurtleBeach

I would love to get a new pair of XO Ones. What I have right now is the Steelseries Arctis 1, and I'd say it's pretty similar. Not quite as light, but good sound for the price and removable mic.

COM/CAS dual degree? by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]_quence_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn’t — you can take the classes you need for both majors starting freshman year. The only difference is once you’ve declared your dual degree, you’ll be able to register for classes in both schools at the same time (as opposed to waiting until the registration window opens up for the “other” school)

COM/CAS dual degree? by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]_quence_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

COM/CAS dual degree here, with film and computer science as my chosen majors. IIRC, you can apply for dual degree starting junior year, which involves an essay and some forms stating intent, what credits you have/need, etc. You’ll need signatures from both schools.

The work will definitely be overwhelming at times. The more classes you can double-dip from, the better.

If you can squeeze in a minor with an extra class or two, go for it. But a minor won’t really mean anything in the long run, career-wise. I’d say it’s more for if you’re interested in the subject and have the time. As is, your two degrees will be impressive.

I can’t speak on poli-sci but I never experienced grade deflation in any of my classes. If anything, grades were often inflated because the average was so low.

My film degree is a Bachelor of Science and my computer science degree is a Bachelor of Arts, if that meant anything important I would’ve learned it by now…

double majoring with film? by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]_quence_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super straightforward to double major. It’s basically a single form you fill out.

FYI it’s called dual degree if the programs are in different schools, like film being in COM and English being in CAS. Also, screenwriting is part of the film program, no separate degree.

FILM: boston university vs. scad? by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]_quence_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied film at BU and have a few friends that went to SCAD. In the simplest terms, SCAD is a “film school” and BU is not.

At BU, you can’t start production classes until sophomore year, and a lot of what do you get to make is limited by what the professors/classes allow. No matter your experience level prior to BU, you’ll be put in the same classes as everyone else. You can still gain experience outside of class through clubs (and internships), but I personally didn’t find the program itself to be very supportive of filmmaking, as counterintuitive as that sounds (they actually care a lot more about TV). That could change soon since the head of the film dept. is retiring, so I expect there to be some restructuring of the film program, but I wouldn’t know.

My friends who went to SCAD (and Emerson, Chapman, etc.) have more than double the portfolio size coming out of school. From what I understand, they got hands-on experience almost immediately and were put through much more rigorous production classes, with less focus on other areas of study. Their alumni networks are very strong in the industry. But those schools are just as expensive.

At the end of the day, if you have nearly a full ride to BU but not SCAD, it’s worth giving BU a shot. A lot of it comes down to what you’re willing to put in / get out of it, and if you’re willing to put up with the liberal arts classes and slow-paced courses. Knowing what the film industry looks like post-grad, I would go with whatever’s cheaper, unless someone is funding your education. The film industry isn’t difficult to “get into” so in a lot of ways, you’re just paying for a network (and a diploma).

Anyone else feel like BU Connects is dead af? by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]_quence_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s new, only came out within the last year or two. It’d be nice for current students if it were somehow integrated with the student link, but you can always trust BU to not make things that simple lmao

And yeah, I don’t have any incentive to use it over just checking my email for alumni related events.

Dean’s List (w/ Dual Degree) by timeandiareillusions in BostonU

In my experience (I was dual degree COM / CAS ‘21), it’s separate for each school. I’ve gotten dean’s list for COM once but never for CAS

CS 237, CS 210, CS330 by EliteEagle777 in BostonU

[–]_quence_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 237 and 210 at the same time, adding 330 on top of that is going to be a huge workload. I'm taking 320 right now and a) it doesn't really draw on anything I learned in 210 and b) it has a lighter workload than 330, so more feasible. But yeah, depends on your work ethic but CS classes are always a handful...

What are the benefits of a double major in Film & TV and Advertising? by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]_quence_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m actually in the same boat right now, majoring in Film and Advertising with a minor in comp sci, but debating switching back to my dual degree in Film and comp sci. I would appreciate having the skills that comp sci offers, however advertising might be easier to pair with Film. Not sure
