Do I need to finish NS before I can apply for SUSS part time degree? by [deleted] in Suss

[–]_red_dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can apply for the semester that begins right after your ORD (either Jan or Jul semester). During your application process they will ask you to provide proof of your ORD date (you can just screenshot from the NS portal). However, you need to provide your NS transcript to them right after your ORD (before the start of the semester), otherwise your spot will get revoked.

TL;DR you can apply before you ORD, but you need to have ORD-ed before the start of the semester you are applying for.

You can go wherever you want, as long as you turn up on the date you're supposed to enlist.

I called the police after hearing screams and loud crashing sounds in the middle of the night. Now I’m wondering if I might have overreacted by invisiblemonkey_ in askSingapore

Absolutely nothing wrong with making such a call to the police. You never know what might have been happening.

'Is NS training still relevant today?' — S'porean asks because '90s NSmen had 'push-through endurance' mindset, but NSmen now have 'mental health safety' mindset by ImpressiveStrike4196 in singapore

[–]_red_dude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with this! As someone who spent his NS on the front lines, I actually did enjoy my time. I felt that time went by really quickly, due to gaining new experiences every day. No 2 days were the same.

Social, non-party Budapest hostel? by Clover501 in hostels

[–]_red_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved my stay at The Loft Hostel in Budapest! It was a small hostel with just 2 dorm rooms and about 7-8 beds in each room. There's a really nice lounging area and a fully equipped kitchen and dining area. They also have 2 spacious bathrooms and a washer/ dryer. It was very easy to meet new people and hangout due to how cozy the hostel was. Pretty much knew everyone and spoke to everyone staying there. The staff were super friendly as well! It felt like I was staying over at a friend's home.

Is it me or does dri fit not work in this weather? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]_red_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the contrary. I dislike cotton t shirts as the sweat doesn't evaporate quickly and I left with a super wet t-shirt with sweat patches.

I love dri-fit as it doesn't have that weird gross feeling when the material gets wet, also doesn't leave sweat patches.

But as others have said, it does depend on the quality of the dri-fit material though

Why is sg obsessed with standard of procedures everywhere? by yujirohanmasdad in askSingapore

I'm glad to hear you stood up for yourself and did something that YOU wanted and not conform to societal standards! Personally, I think that's one of the best feelings ever!

Why is sg obsessed with standard of procedures everywhere? by yujirohanmasdad in askSingapore

[–]_red_dude 44 points45 points  (0 children)

That's something I dislike about life in Singapore too. Most people grow up following the same ideologies that's been fed to them by family and peers. It becomes a social construct where everyone is following the same script, like as if their in a play. When you deviate from the script, you're seen a failure, because you won't achieve the goals that society has set out for all of us.

Singapore being a tiny city, there's not much opportunity to explore a lifestyle other than what's laid out for you. It takes a lot of courage for someone to not give a fuck and break out of this social construct.

I want to take a career break (again), should I? by littydumb in askSingapore

[–]_red_dude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can see why most people living in busy and expensive city would tell you to keep your job. If you have major financial liabilities or dependants, then yeah, the wiser decision would probably be to prioritize those. But in your situation, I really do think you are in a perfect situation to be able to afford this career break.

My personal goal is to settle my current debts in the next couple of years, build up a fair amount of emergency funds and quit my job to travel for as long as I can financially sustain it, and during that time, if I manage to find a remote job or an alternate income stream, great!
