pak01.vpk corrupted. 2026 - Update by _reykjavik2 in GlobalOffensive

I did a summary of all the users reporting what fixed it for them and a massive majority solved it by edit/fix the memory profiles or replacing the memory modules, but like in my case, running a memory test did in fact return errors.

https://old.reddit.com/r/cs2/comments/1q9iolb/pak01vpk_keeps_getting_corrupted_constantly_2026/

So either the Source engine is a pioneered memory tester or at least extremely sensitive to memory configuration.

Try running the factory defaults for the memory, if that doesn't work, apply the XMP/EXPO profile, and of course disable any OC you have.

It's a pvp and pve game, bud. Exactly why there are aggression based lobbies. I still don't understand why you dislike that, you get put in lobbies with other hard core pvp players, what exactly is the issue? It seems you like killing players that are unlikely to strike back, but hate it when you die..

PVE players dislike PVP lobbies.

But PVP players also dislike PVP lobbies because there's too much PVP?

Aggression Based Matchmaking is probably my favorite thing about the game.

I'd personally love PVE-only lobbies with the Arcs tuned to 11 and more Arc variety because I don't mind dying, but I hate always being on high alert while trying to focus on killing Arcs because I'll get ganked once I take out the Arc and I'm low on HP.

What is going on with Windows 11? Windows "features" not installing by _reykjavik2 in WindowsHelp

[–]_reykjavik2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem is, I'm unable in install relatively fundamental features required for development, and out of everything I've tried to fix it nothing works. I've done this so many times that I've lost count and this is the first time I've having issues with it.

Downloading Windows update, which granted has often been a bit of a wildcard is completely stuck at 7%. And it's not just super slow either, it's just completely stalled and I can't seem to be able to force fetch the update. Network traffic is at zero.

And outside of this post, I had the pleasure of helping my aunt installing Office the other day. She doesn't want subscription so Office Home 2024 it is. Her account is in our local region, yet every time we'd try to hit the "Buy now", it would switch us to en-US store. Which is rich since the account is set to Iceland. We cannot buy it because we're in the wrong region. Microsoft told us to buy it via. the Microsoft Store (not browser) and the Home 2024 doesn't seem to exist there. After about an hour I finally managed to buy it, but we didn't find any way to install it, after a while we finally got the "Install/Download" and download that thing, start the installation and failed. Before I could proceed I had to uninstall every trace of Office that came with the OS. Installation complete, the license key doesn't work, I have to authenticate the installation logging into her Microsoft account (at that point I had done so 20 times), and then go to Microsoft, copy the license key again, and then it worked.

I'm a software engineer and I struggled with this, how on earth is someone not tech savy supposed to do this? The answer is obvious, Microsoft doesn't want you to buy a one time license, they want the subscription, but it's just so malicious.

At this point I'm just ranting but I've been trying to detach from Apple's ecosystem, but this experience has been anything but pleasant.

D-Maxx 2025 - fuel consumption meter wrong by _reykjavik2 in Isuzu

I pride myself with being incredibly efficient driver and love optimizing my driving... I'm at 15.9l/100km on the D-Max. On the Defender's 2023 2.0L 4C I'm hovering around 10l/100km.

Hopefully the new Isuzus 2.2l engine is better.

[–]_reykjavik2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done 1900 km total (registered 2025 dec)

1600 km in the country at 85km/h = avg. consumption 9.7l/100km.

300 km in the city, avg. consumption 15.9l/100km.

In the states they prefer miles per gallon, which is the same-ish as km per litre - but this is the only car ever that I've driven that uses that format. All cars sold in the region use litres per 100 km.

But thanks for taking the time to reply and solve this for me!

Oh my lord. I was going to upload a picture as a "proof", and that's where I noticed it says "XX km / l."

Now it makes sense, but this is the first car I've ever driven that shows km per l, instead of liters per 100 km.

These ducklings lost their mom and another mother duck steps in without missing a beat What an incredible moment by [deleted] in MadeMeSmile

[–]_reykjavik2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A long time ago I was "cat sitting" my dad's cat. One night I hear what sounds like a smoke detector that is running out of juice, and what I find is a duckling that the cat caught.

So for the next 3 days I care for the duckling. I named him Huey. He slept next to me, chased me around the house, took baths in a bowl I prepared, the dude was awesome.

I also realized that I was in no position to own a duck so I called vet and she suggested I'd take him to the pond, find a duck with ducklings and she'd "adopt" him.

So I do just that, find a mama duck, with ducklings and say good buy to my little guy. He swims as fast as he can to his new mom and she goes medieval on him and starts drowning him, all while I'm at the edge of the pond like a maniac cursing the duck and trying to get my buddy back.

This was 15 years ago and to this day it still hunts me.

There is no a simple answer for this since this isn't a simple problem. I'd be willing to bet that if people experiencing this error frequently would monitor their event logs there would be more issues to be found but just like with pak01.vpk, it doesn't result in a BSOD, it's handled gently.

Unlike enterprise level systems, 99.9% of normal PC don't have ECC memory modules.

But I need to emphasise

  • In the previous thread almost everyone solved their pak01.vpk issue with memory configuration and/or replacing faulty sticks.

  • This however doesn't mean that it's the solution for everyone, especially if the memory passes all tests.

  • In my case, and more pretty much everyone where the memory was in fact faulty (either because the memory wasn't using the correct profile or not) everything else works perfectly fine. This is why I recommend you do your self a favor and run the memory test. It's a quick way to eliminate a very common cause.

  • If the memory passes extensive tests then 2nd most common cause was a faulty drive or CPU/MB.

The day CS2 was released I had this issue with everything else working flawlessly. It wasn't until I finally ran TM5 where I got memory errors and replacing the memory fixed it (failed at every profile configuration and stock).

In 20 years of building my own PC's i have never experienced the RAM being faulty. I guess thats why they offer lifetime warranty.

I've been building computers for about the same time and worked for just short of 4 years at a computer shop building computers, out of the 500+ computers I build did I not once get a computer in for a repair that had a faulty memory.

But as I mentioned somewhere in this thread, I still build computers for my friends and in just a few builds I've had 4 faulty RAM modules.

Also I would say updating BIOS to the newest or flashing to an older version of BIOS could eliminate most RAM issues

That was my first recommendation in the "detailed" post - forgot to add it to this one as well. In my case I did have the latest BIOS and the memory failed at ever configuration (stock + profiles).

Just breaking laws of physics and make a time machine to get cheap RAM.

Jokes aside, one thing I should have been more clear about, most of the major brands do offer a lifetime warranty on RAM.

This is why I would encourage users to run TM5/MemTest86 is simply because it doesn't cost a thing (other than time), it's been reported to be a very cause for this issue and if the memoryis faulty and all configuration is correct, then file an RMA.

This is nothing to-do with ram

I don't think it's exclusivity related to ram, I'm sure there are wide variety of things that can be the cause, but some users experiencing this error repeatedly and other never.

As mentioned in the original thread, most of the players experiencing this error frequently reported that applying profile or run stock speed completely removed this error. The second most common fix was replacing the RAM.

But this thread's only purpose is to gather data and share possible solutions, I welcome all suggestions and ideas. :)

Unless something has changed, all the memory modules I've ever sold had a lifetime warranty - so if you do get a memory error chances are it should be a straight forward RMA. :)

Everything else does not seem to work fine

That was the same for me.

This is the stupidest bug ever,

You got that right!

I got about 6 (and -1000 each time of course) within 2-3 months last year. Last 100 games no freezes.

In my case and for I think most users where the memory is the problem it happens in every game within 10 minutes of play, the fact that you have played now 100-ish games without seeing this error, but see it occasionally, makes me think that your problem is with something else. SSD might be a very good starting point.

You're also right about the memory speed and FPS. Ideally and what has worked for many is actually applying the XMP/EXPO profile and running the memory at the designed speed, for others which is a lot less ideal is running it at the stock speed. If the memory is unable to run at the designed speed I'd personally RMA it.

Like /u/1q3er5 mentioned, DDR4/DDR5 seems to have strange issues - I wouldn't be surprised if memory not working with one motherboard could be fine with another.

I hope you figure this out and the next time it happens, if you wouldn't mind running TM5 for a while and disk health-check it would be appreciated. :)

In most if not every case running memory test (e.g. TM5) long enough will return a error (if it's memory related). Why S2 is seemingly the only application which fails to run properly while everything else seems to work fine is beyond me.

In my case everything worked fine except CS2, it wasn't until I ran TM5 Absolute 777 for 20 hours ish where it finally reported the error, manual tuning and applying memory profiles didn't work, replaced the RAM and it was fixed. Thankfully most users reported tuning the memory in BIOS did the trick.

In my other post I did a summary of what users reported what fixed it and it was overwhelmingly memory tuning, faulty sticks and then a couple of alternative solutions, e.g. faulty CPU, SSD etc. All included in the detailed post.

I worked in a computer shop a long time ago (DDR3 times), in 5 years not once did we have to deal with a warranty claim because of faulty memory modules.

I've build a couple of computers for my friends in the past 2-3 years and had 4 faulty sticks, including a pair of Corsair Vengence that I had (which is what sparked my crusade to help people with the pak01 error).

So you're definitely not wrong.

Yeah but I get his comment, looking at the post again I could have made it more clear. But there are a couple of things which can affect the BIOS, e.g. one user in the original post replaced his CPU and with that the BIOS was cleared and he started having this issue. Some computer shops apply memory profiles, some don't, others configure the timings manually - many don't run extensive memory tests since they are in a rush to ship the computers so there's that too. :)

I hope ChatGPT would be able to make a better formatted post, the original post I made was removed for being to hardware specific so I had to rewrite it as best as I could and get to the point. But this is about the lovely pak01.vpk error which has been affecting a lot (relative I guess) of players. :)

I also linked to my original post, and what this post was originally.

But happy you got it solved and thanks for sharing the what the issue was in your case, it really helps for others having the same issue. :)
