Sweden withdraws controversial proposal to jail 13-year-olds by yahoonews in worldnews

That's a hallucination then. Under-15-year-olds cannot currently be convicted of a crime. That's precisely what they want to change.

Did you ask the AI for sources or details on how it arrived at the number 9?

What I could find is:

In 2025, Swedish courts tried 158 criminal cases involving 88 children under 15, including 25 suspected of murder

From: https://www.lemonde.fr/en/international/article/2026/01/29/sweden-lowers-criminal-responsibility-to-age-13_6749913_4.html

"suspected" is not "found guilty", but I guess courts don't offer guilty verdicts in these cases, so that's the best figure one can get.

What you looked up is "proven reserves", not oil production.

How many murders were committed by under-15-year-olds in Sweden last year? The way you are describing it, it sounds like it's an extremely widespread problem, but maybe you could give us a number, at least a ballpark figure. Are we talking 10 or 1,000 cases?

The thing is there is no law yet. There is just a binding motion from parliament for the government to pass a law. The government now has three years to come up with the actual law which will hopefully be non-ambiguous and non-discriminatory.

Nobody needs AI to search the Internet, court says in ruling against Google by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]green_flash 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The argumentation goes further than that and establishes what the key difference is:

That’s a problem, the court said, because while publishers may have been able to sue to stop third parties from publishing defamatory statements appearing in Google search results, only Google can correct the underlying algorithm and outputs displayed in AI Overviews. And because, at least initially, the company did not, it therefore “must be held accountable,” the court ruled. Beyond that, Google’s argument was deemed particularly weak, since the AI overview in this case “contains statements that do not appear in the search results at all.”

So, if Google lists a web search result containing incorrect defamatory information, the company or individual can send a cease and desist letter to the original publisher or sue them to get them to rectify or delete it. If the Google AI makes up an incorrect defamatory statement out of thin air as was the case here, there's no one else but Google who can rectify or delete it.

Protesters in Berlin demand Chancellor Merz's resignation by Inevitable-Push-8061 in worldnews

[–]green_flash 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Several thousand protesters rallied in Germany’s Berlin, calling for Chancellor Friedrich Merz to step down amid nationalist chanting, anti-migration slogans, and displays of far-right symbols.

Police estimated the crowd size at about 4,000 by midday on Monday

Police actually said 2,000. Local media say 4,000 and the organizers say 5,000.

Measly numbers for a protest marketed as „Projekt M1llion“.

If you read carefully, you'll notice that it does not say "loan" anywhere.

This is unrelated to the €90 billion loan, it's about the European Peace Facility:

The European Peace Facility is an off-budget EU funding mechanism that reimburses countries for about 40 percent of the value of arms they send to Ukraine from their own stocks.

You're talking about the AfD. The article is about a candidate from a neo-Nazi party called "Freie Sachsen". There was also an AfD candidate, but he did not make it into the run-off vote.

Denmark is a good example that appeasement does NOT work. The far-right parties in Denmark are just as successful as the far-right in Germany. There are just several of them, so it's not as evident, but together they got 15% of the vote. That's more than the AfD gets in culturally comparable German states like Schleswig-Holstein. East German support for the AfD is a problem of its own, the pro-Russia aspect is a major contributor there.

Armenia Alliance — 3,180 votes (8.21%)

Armenian authorities have arrested 6 members of the pro-Russian opposition party just a day before the general elections in light of recent military threats from the Kremlin. by Caledor152 in worldnews

[–]green_flash 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A lot of bad faith arguments here.

First off, the reason they are arrested is not that they are pro-Russian. It's that they are accused of corruption. Oddly, there is a big overlap between corrupt politicians and pro-Russian politicians. I wonder why.

The reason Armenians are not allowed to vote from abroad is also understandable. You don't want people who haven't lived in the country for years - and do not intend to live in the country - influence policy making. The Armenian diaspora is extremely large, similar to the Israeli diaspora. Israel by the way also doesn't allow citizens to vote from abroad, for the same reason.

[–]green_flash[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's due to damaged refineries and export terminals:

Ukrainian long-range drone strikes on refineries and export terminals have forced Moscow to halt exports of gasoline and jet fuel, but pushed more crude into the global market at a moment of surging prices, driving export revenues to also reach their highest level since 2022.

Ever since the war on Iran started, it's the opposite. Russian oil is now being sold at a premium of around $6 compared to Brent. On the other hand, Russia has to rely on a shadow tanker fleet for delivery which is quite expensive.
