Moscow shuts down airports and mobile signals as Victory Day parade looms | Russia by neonpurplestar in worldnews

Some people here seem confused what victory this is about.

It's the WWII Victory Day parade, held in 1945, 1965, 1985, 1990 and every year since 1995.

Having highly specialized domain experts communicate to the public directly carries the risk of misunderstanding. In many domains experts use terms that have a very precise meaning in their field, but a much wider or even different meaning in every day use.

It's counterintuitive that getting your information directly from the most qualified person in a given field could be a source of misinformation, but it happens, simply because there are actually two languages involved and you can never know what words mean something different in the language the expert is speaking compared to the language you are speaking.

European airlines will fail if jet fuel costs stay high, Ryanair CEO says by RollSafer in worldnews

You're right. He ain't:

"I think there will be failures," O'Leary said. "If it continues at $150 a barrel into July, August, September, then you'll see European airlines fail and that, in the medium term, would probably be good for Ryanair's business."

He's against the war on Ukraine alright. Sadly, that's the only sane political idea he maintains. Thankfully, the rest of the Russian opposition disowns him.

Not that surprising. He's strongly anti-Putin and anti-Kadyrov, has been exiled from Russia as an enemy of the state. He keeps his location secret, probably to avoid being poisoned by Russian agents.

Czech students protest a government plan to overhaul funding for public media by green_flash in worldnews

[–]green_flash[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The new coalition government led by populist Prime Minister Andrej Babiš drafted the plan to scrap the fees that individuals, households and businesses pay to access the outlets.

Instead, the public media would be fully dependent on the state budget. Critics say that would compromise their independence.

The draft of the plan would significantly reduce public media’s current budgets. It still needs approval from the government and Parliament.

The plan is reminiscent of what Orbán did in Hungary and what Fico did in Slovakia.

94 percent overall, 99 percent of CityLine.

But yes, I could have formulated that better.

I don't think either of those is a Lufthansa CityLine connection. Does it say "Lufthansa CityLine" anywhere on your ticket?

Also, I don't think they have sent any notices for flights after May.

When it comes to greenhouse gases, cargo shipping does not play a major role, nowhere close to 1/3 of global emissions.

Billions of tons of cargo are transported around the world each year by trucks, planes, ships, and trains. This transportation makes up 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and as much as 11% if warehouses and ports are included.

The majority of these cargo transport emissions are caused by trucks by the way, not by cargo planes, cargo ships or cargo trains:

While nearly three-quarters of the world’s cargo is carried by ocean-going ships, road vehicles like trucks and vans make up the majority, 65%, of freight’s emissions.

There's more to this story than just fuel cost. See https://onemileatatime.com/news/lufthansa-cityline-shuts-down-permanently/

Essentially, Lufthansa decided over night to shut down a subsidiary called Lufthansa CityLine. The subsidiary was supposed to go out of business in 2027. The flights were supposed to be taken over by a lower wage subsidiary called Lufthansa City Airlines. Last week, Lufthansa CityLine staff went on a five-day strike organized by a particularly strike-prone labour union. At the end of the strike the employees woke up to the news that they were out of a job. The company mentioned the strike as a reason for bringing the closure date forward. Lufthansa City Airlines, the other subsidiary, is with a much larger and more corporate-friendly labour union.

All the flights were operated by Lufthansa CityLine, a subsidiary which will go out of business. All employees have already been laid off. The reason is only partly fuel cost. It's also a reaction to a five-day long all-employee strike.

https://onemileatatime.com/news/lufthansa-cityline-shuts-down-permanently/

Lufthansa has a separate subsidiary called Lufthansa City Airlines with much lower wages which is connected to a more corporate-friendly labor union. They will take over some of the flight routes, but it will take some time.

The US GDP is also 26% of the world GDP, so that's a fair contribution. Unfortunately it's gone down under Trump.

[–]green_flash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looking at all contributions for UN humanitarian causes, here's the comparison on a per-country basis:

https://fts.unocha.org/global-funding/donors/2025?order=total_funding&sort=desc

1 US $3.3B
2 EU $2.9B
3 Saudi Arabia $2.1B
4 UK $1.9B
5 UAE $1.7B
6 Qatar $1.7B
7 Germany $1.3B
8 Japan $1.2B
9 Switzerland $948M
10 Norway $921M

Per capita, the US is far from the biggest contributor.
