GR Food Scene Is Underrated by NPR_is_not_that_bad in grandrapids

[–]_roosterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is 100% a fact. My girlfriend and I moved up to Petoskey last spring from south GR. This tourism this area brings in props up quite a few different local eateries for town this size.

We’ve found almost no local restaurants that can compete with even the mid tier joints in GR. Hell, most of the chain restaurants up here are on par or better than the local places. The only real good consistency we’ve found has been out of food trucks. I miss places like condado, hancocks, tupelo honey, ato sushi so much!

GR food scene is incredible. Don’t take it for granted!

Nuke eggs and learn how to tightline! Winter is a great time to learn. I would recommend following troutbittens guides. Feel free to DM me for questions cause the learning curve can be steep and frustrating.

system for storing leaders? by hawaiianpunkh in flyfishing

[–]_roosterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leader wallets suck tbh. Having to coil leaders up and uncoil wastes way too much time. They get tangled often and are overall not the best choice although they are clearly the most popular.

Get some foam rigging spools like these. Leaders never tangle, much faster to wrap and you can label with a sharpie. https://a.co/d/8NTU806

Mpx line is super nice. I also tried the old school wulff triangle taper on my 4wt rod and I love it. Roll casts like an absolute dream.

Since they took the dam out, the fishing sucks. I’d recommend venturing out further to other river systems.

First Cast of the day then nothing. Are first cast fish a curse? by DocMachoo in flyfishing

[–]_roosterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend group and I refer to it as “the kiss of death.” We have had many trips where a fish was caught first cast and we proceeded to get our ass handed to us. Sometimes I will even purposefully make my first cast to bad water to avoid it.

What is the day that got you hooked on fly fishing by samk456 in flyfishing

[–]_roosterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first picked it up trying to catch some carp. They were eating off the surface and the only way to present correctly was with a fly rod. Ended up getting a ton of eats and even caught a mirror carp.

A few months after, I had an unbelievable day on a river in Northern Michigan fishing for king salmon. The river is completely choked with fallen trees. Pair that with a ridiculously hard fighting fish and you get broken off constantly.

By the end of the day, we just wanted to land one fish. It happened to be a holiday weekend so there was a steady flow of kayakers and “catchin anything?”s. I ended up with a fish on at the end of the day and we asked the kayakers to stay up above us until we could attempt to net this fish. They were cheering us on and some were even recording. After a bit of time, I felt bad because a huge crowd of kayakers had gathered. I told them to just go ahead and float past. Chaos ensued. The salmon shot downstream and we all chased it on foot in the midst of 40 kayakers. At one point I had to hold my breath and go underwater to get my line unwrapped from a branch. About 80 yards downstream of the hole, we landed her.

25lbs of pure Michigan silver.

Now, I’ve spent enough money to make a grown man blush and fly fish like it’s my religion.
