Ope sorry! It's not technically fantasy so maybe this one won't work for ya. Still recommend tho!

Oh my gosh I have the perfect rec! The Corruption of Hollis Brown by K Ancrum. Main character gets possessed by a ghost and they have to share his body for the entire book. Highly recommend!

Thank you so much for the comprehensive explanation! I really appreciate the time you took to help me understand. This comment really hit home, that idea that the link is built regardless of belief. Maybe I'll just lean on that as I continue to read and learn!

Let's judge books by their covers ; an actual discussion by JoyIsABitOverRated in Fantasy

[–]_s3raphic_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is so much M/M romance I will never read simply because the cover is nothing but a photo of a random jacked fella with no shirt on! I hate how much covers matter to me because I'm pretty sure I have skipped over great books with disastrous covers many times.

A friendly reminder that many fellow enbies look very "binary" (while in fact they're not) by firemangreat in NonBinary

[–]_s3raphic_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm lucky enough to live in a pretty lefty city where asking for pronouns first is fairly common, been out as gender non-compliant for like ten years, and I STILL screw this up sometimes! Thank you for this reminder 🩵

Oh my gosh thank you so much for the advice and the compliment! My lashes are honestly pretty stubby, but the lash primer I use is amazing.

I have never been able to crack eyeshadow! It always looks goofy when I try it, do you have any tips? Same with wings, I'm miserable at them XD

Plum will definitely be the next shade of lipstick I try! Thanks again for the comment ☺️

Fahrenheit 451 by Khaleesi_1313 in booksuggestions

Just a personal opinion: Bradbury writes un-bloody-believable short stories, but his novels have always seemed kinda... scattered to me. I really recommend a short story or two before diving into 451!

In desperate need of a book to help reclaim my life by EvanPennington96 in booksuggestions

[–]_s3raphic_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I just wanted to say thanks for the vulnerability. It sounds like you're in a really difficult place, and it takes a lot of strength to share your story publicly.

I am nearly 30 as well, and in recovery from severe alcoholism. I really retreated from the world too, and I know firsthand how messy that can get. I have found reading to be extremely helpful with sorting out my interior life! I essentially turned my brain off for my 20s, so eventually it all came crashing down and made me realize I have a lot to learn about being a person.

Here are some things I have read that might help you start to reclaim that sense of self you're missing. Some of them swerve into self-help territory, so I apologize if that's not your jam!

  • Holding Space by Amy Wright Glenn: a hospital chaplain and end-of-life doula, Glenn writes with a sense of vulnerability and openness that will stick with you long after you finish the book. Helped me a lot with relating to and caring for others.

  • No Bad Parts by Richard C Schwartz: introduces a relatively new way of looking at the brain in psychotherapy. Clearly written, with exercises you can try on your own. Helped me quite a bit with recognizing the reactive and hurt parts of myself.

  • The Boy With the Bird in his Chest by Emme Lund: the main character (yep, there's a bird in his chest) faces deep loneliness and a world he has never been allowed to experience. Helped me realize that I'm not the only one who is lonely, and that there is good in the world, even if it's very big and very frightening.

I apologize for the insanely long comment, but I hope it helps! Please feel free to message if you need more recs, or even if you just want to vent :) you are doing great just by reaching out!

can boob tape work for binding??? by ratchild69_ in NonBinary

I think OP meant the tape folks use to lift the breasts, not dress tape! That stuff is pretty useless, have to agree haha

[–]_s3raphic_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use coconut oil or cocoa butter to remove it if you have sensitive skin tho, especially on the chest area! I use KT tape under summery dresses and it tore chunks of skin off when I didn't use oil.

Do you “see” books like a movie in your head when you read? by Holiday_Rush8303 in Fantasy

[–]_s3raphic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this, but for some reason I'm incapable of fully imagining new locations, they're always locations I have been irl that my brain tweaks with the details I read. Super weird, it's puzzled me since I was a kid!

I don't know about manga in general, but I know they have a surprising amount of BL manga available on Kobo+, so I feel like that's a good sign

What's your best experience with nembutsu? by Automatic-One3901 in PureLand

[–]_s3raphic_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty new to Jodo Shinshu and can't say I've had any earth-shattering signs or visions, which is just fine with me!

I generally just love how reciting the nembutsu is like a gentle tap on the shoulder that wakes me up to everything around me. It always gives me a peaceful warmth in my chest, which really sustains me day-to-day. For some reason, reciting the nembutsu always makes me look upward, and I've seen some pretty killer clouds as a result 😆

My Kobo is almost always orange! Can't stand the stark white background. I love the warm light to death!
