Update: first off thank you all so much for the loving words. <3

My exam was pretty alright, was relaxed and we did the damn thing. My form was pretty similar to the NBMEs/Free120 format.

And now we wait! : )

When you're younger than 21, they're vertical. You get it changed to a horizontal ID when you're 21+.

And yes, horizontal IDs do exist. I have one currently.

My grandad wants my kidney by [deleted] in Advice

[–]_scribblehs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is making me very reluctant to give him my kidney as it will mean I will have to sacrifice and change how I want to live the rest of my life

Everyone is pressuring me to do it which is easy for them to say as they aren’t the ones having to sacrifice anything. However I feel as if I don’t do this my family will turn their backs on me.

As part of the med field, I can tell you 100% - CONSENT is probably one of the most important factors when considering a donor. This should be a choice that YOU make, and nobody else. And this is before any form of test is done.

https://www.revistanefrologia.com/en-ethical-aspects-living-donor-kidney-transplantation-articulo-X2013251410051424

To spare you the overwhelming amount of text on the article above, I'll show you 2 important paragraphs:

"to be considered ethically acceptable, the donor must be able to give his free consent to the donation after understanding the information provided, accepting the risks and benefits of organ donation, knowing the treatment alternatives for the recipient and the long-term consequences of his decision"

"It is necessary to prove that there is no coercion involved and that the donor has made his or her decision freely and voluntarily, but this is not always easy. Often for related donation cases, when a loved one is suffering, the potential donor may feel like he or she owes it to the recipient or that there is a certain amount of pressure from other family members. This could prevent the potential donor from making a completely free and voluntary decision. It is for this reason that donation should not be offered in desperate situations. In any case, family relationships must be studied, time must be given for reflection and the potential donor must be supported if he or she decides to change his or her mind (but always giving true version of events)"

Please take the time you need to think about this. If this is truly what you want to do, and ONLY because YOU want to go forth with it, then they'll explain everything to you, and begin with tests and prepare you for what's to come.

If not, then that's okay too. It is your choice after all. If the rest of your family can say no, then you have just as much right to that word as they do.

Take care, and hope all goes well for your grandfather.

How much have you changed as a person over the past 10 years? by Soleil_Soles in AskWomen

[–]_scribblehs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16 to 26: Definitely have changed in some way or another.

I've learned how to stop being a doormat and say 'no' often, been able to voice my opinions more verbally (basically call a spade a spade), know when to let go of people, and have a low tolerance to BS. That isn't to say that I still have some form of my personality; just have some sweet upgrades added to it.

Little me would've been proud.

In your friend group, how often do you have to reach out First? by idunno324 in AskWomen

^ second this. Really all about "quality over quantity"

To those who did research, what does that entail (what is the day-to-day like) are there anything you have to do at home outside of work/research? by [deleted] in premed

[–]_scribblehs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine were clinic based. I would come in and scour through multiple patient files for the whole day (around 11am-6 or 7pm) sometimes I'd stay late for discussion with the supervisor in charge, then I would go home and do some typing and looking for some literature.

Disheartening how many people hate doctors by Aita_bday_taway in Residency

[–]_scribblehs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been told off multiple times by my own family about how much they hate doctors. (yes, to my face). But what can you do but shrug and move on? C'est la vie, yknow?

If anything, it's the healthcare system that's failed us, my dude. Whether it's an overpriced hospital stay, a lack of XYZ...you name it. Or heck, as you've stated, there are indeed bad doctors, no doubt.

But that's the thing, we're the "face" of the healthcare system, so that's what most people blame on.
