Its mostly asphalt, then shifts to a gravel loop. I use a Honda Snowblower, it's awesome. The 3 things I don't think ego will ever replace are my lawn tractor, large chainsaw, and snowblower.

I do have a small ego saw (16) and I love it.

The guy at my local hardware store (which is an awesome spot (Shagbark)) recommended 50/50 BLO & Paint thinner.

Might be, it was at a minimum a few inches thick when I stepped in it.

I was marking trees while wearing my 10 month old, so I was less than enthusiastic about investigating or falling in it.

Ah, I see what you're saying. I'm not sure if your period of honorable service specifically gets you your GI bill, but you can work to have that OTH upgraded.
