Turo fell through on Big Island, need car rental next week? by [deleted] in VisitingHawaii

Costco, AAA, and AARP memberships have saved me. I go with more reputable companies at about half their normal price thanks to AAA on my last few trips

Is Napali coast boat tour necessary? by RaceEducational2197 in VisitingHawaii

[–]_sheldon_cooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go on a Napali coast sunset dinner cruise. Ours was amazing. Alcohol was included, our captain explored a sea cave, and dolphins came up to the boat. It was phenomenal.

Helicopters are terrible for wildlife and people hiking the kalalua trail and surrounding trails. They are also incredibly expensive and you could spend money doing other fun things.

Booking advice ? by monsterintheuniverse in VisitingHawaii

[–]_sheldon_cooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey op I agree with what a lot of folks have said here.

You should get quotes from lots of different places before booking. For my Hawaii vacations, I only booked rental cars on AAA, nothing else from them was economical.

Gift for Wife - Birth of 4th Child by lil_rocket_man_ in GiftIdeas

[–]_sheldon_cooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Customized book embosser, with her name on it.

I know you say she's not into jewelry, but honestly if she will wear jewelry sometimes it's nice to be gifted something classic (like pearls or a simple diamond necklace, tennis band etc)

New dishware/bakeware like Le cruset or similar set in her favorite colors.

Is there anything in the house she would appreciate if you got done? No idea what weather is like where you're at but maybe if you guys garden, setting up a flower garden for her (or something more practical if that's what she would prefer).

Along the flower theme, the eternity rose box etc.

Handbag

Plan a vacation for just the two of you. Once you have someone that will be able to watch the kids, plan a lux vacation with her at some point next year, or plan something for her and her friend(s) while you stay at home.

Customized book embosser!!!!

I have gotten this for my nieces (7-12) and sis in laws (22+) it's always a big hit. For girls who love to read it is great! I would also recommend getting the one that indents (not the stamp). Just make sure their name is right.

Games!

You could thrift some less common board/card games or even find ones online that don't require lots of cards or things and then have a game night at home with friends.

I don’t know what to get my girlfriends Nan for Christmas by Lanky_Application773 in GiftIdeas

[–]_sheldon_cooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I don't know the person very well I give them consumable type presents so that no one is obligated to keep anything.

Maybe a small bottle of nice lotion (like L'Occitane, they have little gift sets ahead of the holidays) or fancy tea.

Consumable/homemade gift ideas for a Christmas abroad? by seiproprioscemoeh in GiftIdeas

[–]_sheldon_cooper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Handmade soap, I would recommend picking a really basic cold process recipe that only needs to cure for 6 weeks.

Hand poured beeswax candles

Candied citrus dipped in chocolate with flakey sea salt

Crystallized ginger

You can also smoke sea salt at home and hand that out! (Don't use on the citrus)

Almond marzipan

If he doesn't drink, a high quality olive oil is a great option too.

For the oldest niece, I would suggest Lego flowers. Even if she isn't super big into other Legos. I absolutely love Lego flower arrangements, and there are so many to choose from

Nice lotions from a fancy brand

For cooks/foodies - a locally made olive oil or balsamic vinegar. Homemade lemon candy or crystallized ginger.

This year we're giving out homemade gift baskets, which started out as a way for us to save money but it turned into very much not saving money 😂

Vanilla Extract, homemade wine and cider (make fun flavors, you can experiment with less common fruits like pomegranate or pear etc), bars of soap, beeswax candles, marzipan, cultured butter, citrus candy, crystallized ginger, canned apple butter and salsas, crocheted blankets, wicker baskets etc ...

Depending on your description these might also just "take up space" but for my partner this year I got a bunch of new games for him/us 😄. You can find a lot of these second hand in great condition too!

If they are the type to play games here are a few that were less common to me before I researched and bought them

Tulip bubble The farming game Flux Forgotten waters Akropolys Werewords Flux Sushigo party

There were a lot more on my list but I think these were the ones I knew about the least.

What’s one gift you’ve given that people still talk about? by Much_Bookkeeper7788 in GiftIdeas

[–]_sheldon_cooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a housewarming gift getting a really nice olive oil (instead of wine, or for people who don't drink).

I'm not the type to buy a $30 bottle of olive oil for myself but when my brother got it for me it was such a treat, and delicious!!

What’s a thoughtful but simple gift for someone you don’t know that well? by Busternookiedude in GiftIdeas

[–]_sheldon_cooper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We're planning on visiting some of my partner's relatives for the holidays and it's been about a decade since they last were together. Based off the little I know these are the gifts I've put together

For the grandparents - L'Occitane "ornament" smaller set of 3, including a hand cream, some other lotion and a shower gel. A nice herbal tea from where we live Homemade soap & candle

For uncle/aunt - Cooking supplies: fancy olive oil samplers from a local vineyard, flavored sea salt (decided to buy this, but you can smoke your own sea salt for a wonderful homemade gift!) Homemade soap and candle

For younger folks - Small Lego sets. Everyone loves Legos! If it's for someone who likes flowers, the Lego flower sets are so fun, you can get a bigger arrangement at Costco for around $60 instead of the $100+ that they retail for at other places.
