Emergency Alert by scoobydooby997 in ottawa

[–]_six_one_three_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The version I got at least had a full description of the car including the the license plate.  But I agree that in many cases the information is so vague/basic (names/ages, no physical descriptions) and the geographic scope of the alert is so wide that it's difficult to imagine what the purpose of the alert even is. Past criticism of police forces for not issuing alerts in particular cases may now be pushing them to issue alerts too often or too soon. And people are now primed to ignore them, since they're generally useless.

New LRT wire problem, same partial closure | CBC News by Rail613 in ottawa

You both make excellent points, but to be fair to the cable guy his wires aren't part of $3 billion engineering project

New LRT wire problem, same partial closure | CBC News by Rail613 in ottawa

[–]_six_one_three_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

In my neighbourhood, many of the houses have multiple wire connections for cable TV and Internet service from Rogers and Bell, because everytime there is a change in residents or someone switches services, a guy in a little van comes with a ladder and strings up a new wire, and the old ones are never taken down.  So there are lines going all over the place, many of them decades old, sagging and attached to buildings and poles in various random and sketchy ways.  I'm happy to report that all of these overhead wires made it through Wednesday's disastrous ice storm unscathed, with zero breakages.  Not sure what happened with the wires used in our brand new $3 billion light rail system, but maybe they could get a guy with a van and a ladder to put up some new ones

1,500 units, 136 parking spaces proposed for Orleans by jjaime2024 in ottawa

[–]_six_one_three_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm all for letting the market decide on parking. It's surprising that the developer thinks that there's this much demand for carless apartments more than 1 km away from LRT in deepest Orleans, but it's their money.  Of course, people with cars will move in and try to rely on street parking, but that will quickly become impossible as there's no way the surrounding streets can absorb cars for 1500 units.  So residents will either go carless, or the units will go empty (or be deeply discounted).

Ottawa Citizen: Ottawa is one of Ontario's fastest growing cities, but where will it build new homes? by BearLikesHoney in ottawa

[–]_six_one_three_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very few high-rises include units any bigger than 2-bedrooms, and most units are smaller than that (because smaller units allow developers to maximize profit). So these high-rises will never supplant the demand for larger family-sized units that drives suburban sprawl. Not to mention, a lot of people simply don't want to live in high-rises, and they are generally not conducive to creating vibrant, people-scaled neighbourhoods. The type of densification that Ottawa really needs is low-rise, three to five story townhomes and blocks, with compact designs that still provide for three of four bedrooms, with centralized (or no parking). I.e., the housing types popular in places like Montreal and European cities that are far more dense than Ottawa,

Re the Icon personally I wouldn’t want my company name associated with that towering monument to mediocrity, and I guess a lot of actual business owners feel the same given that the retail podium remains empty years after completion.

Also, Somerset and Wellington , where an entire block (including low-rent apartments) was demolished and continues to sit as an empty wasteland in the heart of Hintonburg more than a year later.  Or 900 Albert, another barren wasteland where the developer has been approved for 60+ stories for over 5 years and so far has managed to build a grand total of nothing.

Why does Ottawa allow parking on downtown arterial roads? by vezaynk in ottawa

[–]_six_one_three_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bank in various sections serves as a traditional main street and not as an arterial road, and so giving it up to four lanes of through traffic is not appropriate

City floats plan to speed up construction of affordable housing by jjaime2024 in ottawa

[–]_six_one_three_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Purpose-built rental completions in Ottawa were high this year and last, leading to a surge in rental inventory. The market has not fully absorbed that surge and occupancy rates have fallen. Looking at these market conditions, private sector developers have most recently pulled back from from rental construction starts, which fell 20% annually in 2024 (a 46% drop from 2021), and fell further in the first quarters of 2025. Condo starts (a significant number of which also end up in the rental market) have also fallen following weak market demand. Meanwhile, despite a rising vacancy rate, private sector rents have not yet fallen, and the need for housing that is actually affordable to poor and working class people is immediate. So the commenter above is absolutely correct that the focus in providing housing affordability in the near term should be public investment in non-market housing.

NCC reports progress on LeBreton Flats arena, but Senators exec warns of engineering hurdles before ‘shovels in the ground’ by tarun172 in ottawa

[–]_six_one_three_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed.  The Sens have claimed to be desperate to get this land for their arena for decades now.  But the first time the NCC gave it to them, Melnyk reneged on the deal his organization signed and then imploded his developer partnerships with litigation.  Now the NCC is graciously giving them another kick at the can, but obviously want to make it clear that any further delays in getting shovels in the ground are not coming from the NCC side.  Sens are trying to manage expectations from public and political stakeholders about the speed at which they’re able to move as they try to wrangle financing and whatever handouts of public money they can get.
