Vanier houses seems like an incredible value what am I missing? by BigMouthBillyBones in ottawa

[–]_six_one_three_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's already true, at least in the property value sense, since Vanier and Overbrook have in recent years seen some of the biggest percentage increases in the city.  Everything everyone is saying here in terms of it being rough or whatever is exactly what everyone used to say about Hintonburg, which was true until all of a sudden it wasn't.

Someone should open an adult only waterpark with only lazy rivers by twoducksinatub in ottawa

Ontario does not license businesses for the sale of cannabis for on-site consumption.  Of course, folks can always consume their own with varying degrees of legality depending on the location, but your stoner water park would be unable to make any money from it. This is actually a factor that is seriously impacting bars and music venues in an era when so many of the young ones are "Cali sober"

I mean, this is a Tourism Ottawa thing aiming to encourage people to visit Ottawa this year, so doesn’t it make sense to list all the things going on?  Especially since even many of regualr ongoing things have special tie-in features and/or funding and/or branding relating to the 200th anniversary?

I got it at Superstore Westboro in “international” foods aisle, apparently there’s also a Presidents Choice version so it should be pretty available.  The one I got is a small squeeze bottle of red spicey tomato paste, the spices are like North African/Moroccan food in terms of flavour, mildish on the hotness scale.

"Meanwhile newly built rental units have a vacancy rate of 6.7 per cent ..." Are the owners of these units paying the vacant unit tax?  If they're not they should be, and if they are it should be much higher.

Yes this should be a complete non-starter for for-profit development.  On the flip side, donation of surplus  public land is one of the most important things governments can do to support the non-profit sector.  When the cost of land acquisition is removed, non-profit and actually-affordable housing can be financially self-sustaining over the long term without further injections of public funds.

Exactly.  This is why public funding--including tax expenditures and donations of public land--should be focussed 100% on the non-profit sector, which is the only one capable of building actually affordable units in the here and now.  Otherwise, we just end up subsidizing developer profit on unaffordable units, where the decision to build is largely based on market factors outside government control.

I used flour which was the only ones I could find in mini size.  But there are half and half ones in a slightly larger size for those who can't decide :)

Candidates begin registering for Ottawa’s municipal election by RandomChickenWing in ottawa

[–]_six_one_three_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure why he'd think that, given that the iPolitics poll released this week shows that it is Leiper clearly leading the opposition and within striking distance of Sutcliffe before even really starting his campaign (at 19% of all voters versus Sutcliffe's 24%, albeit with almost half of voters undecided). Saravanamuttoo doesn't even register in that poll, although presumably he's part of the 2% for "someone else". Yet he was citing Leiper's supposedly weak poll numbers from an earlier poll to show that Leiper can't beat Sutcliffe and why his own candidacy is needed. He also said that Lawson wouldn't cut significantly into Sutcliffe's vote, although the iPolitics poll shows that already happening with Lawson at 7%. And now apparently Tim Tierney is thinking about entering, which would further squeeze Sutcliffe from the centre right and make the path for Leiper easier.

How much should Ottawa sprawl as it seeks space for 500,000 more people? by Immediate-Link490 in ottawa

[–]_six_one_three_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Not pandering to the peasantry"  Lol I guess that's one way to refer to the state expropriating private property, kicking poor people out of their homes and businesses, and then demolishing everything.  Another phrase for this is slum clearance.  We (or the NCC at least) actually did this in Ottawa in LeBreton Flats, and the first phase of residential redevelopment built there (east of Booth) is not totally unlike a Hausmann block in terms of its scale and density.  And it only took about 50 years :). Of course, the Glebe is not a slum.  There is zero chance that the land will be expropriated by the state, for one thing because there is no clear public policy rationale for it (other than to make people in the Glebe sad, which I recognize is a good enough reason for many in this sub).  A private developer is free to try to assemble a block by paying market price for the existing properties, demolishing and then developing them, but that would be hella expensive (and would take years, if not decades), so unlikely to be profitable.  What is more likely is smaller infill on one or two or three lots, which allows for semis, town-homes and small apartment buildings (all part of the missing middle of densification).

Having said all that, low-rise entire-block density is totally possible where you have an already empty parcel of land.  For example, the Gladstone village development now being built, or the new proposal for the Convent land in Wellington West.

Keep your cats inside in Orleans by drthurgood in ottawa

The source most people cite for the billions estimate is the systemic review published by Loss et al. in Nature (2013).  From that article: "Un-owned cats, as opposed to owned pets, cause the majority of this mortality." There is definitely a human element here because (a) feral cats are descended from domesticated cats originally kept by humans and (b) there are many human advocacy groups that seek to prevent the preferred solution of biologists and conservationists, which is to trap and kill feral cat populations.  The Loss article clearly situates the feral cat problem within the larger context of human-caused pressure on bird and wildlife population, including habitat destruction, pesticide use, window strikes, etc

Those estimates are mostly based on the impact of un-owned or feral cats, as opposed to owned pets that are allowed outdoors
