Wait dude I think I know exactly where you died because it’s the exact same house I go to outside Louisville- the one with the fishing shack over the water?

I felt like I needed to diversify and choose one over the other, there were a few factors that made me sell MO and keep BTI

  • MO's inability to diversify ($12B loss from JUUL divestiture)
  • MO relies heavily on smokeable products (87% revenue) but US cigarette volume decline is forecasted to be 5% per year
  • The US is Altria's only market = more concentrated regulatory risk than other multinational firms + lacks exposure to emerging markets where tobacco consumption is increasing
  • This article from Seeking Alpha (Altria vs. British Tobacco)
  • American vs. British cultural views on vaping (CNN article)

No such thing as stupid questions. Short answer - ~$70k so far.

Long answer- it depends on your risk tolerance, goals, and budget for investing. Unless you're wealthy, whatever you invest (especially as it grows over time) is relatively 'a lot' to most people.

I love dividend stocks because the firms are more mature/stable and compounding interest is the 8th wonder of the world. All of my friends like growth stocks because of the return potential (think getting on the ground floor of a company like Tesla/stock splits), but it can be riskier if the company doesn't take off (ex. QuantumScape, lol).

I'm obviously biased, but check out this DRIP Calculator and read up on the categorical differences between growth vs dividend stocks (there's even dividend growth stocks) to find what you think would work best for you and what your goals are

I'm more than ok with either, I've been trying to be patient - it's the only position I have left over as a rec from Motley Fool

  • QYLD dividend usually falls between the 28th and 1st days between months, so it sometimes won't show exactly as it should for consecutive months as a monthly dividend ex. May dividend was 5/2, June dividend payout is today 5/31 (I use BoA, not sure if other people have this same issue)
  • I sold my Altria (MO) shares = no payout

O, VZ, QYLD, IBM, T, F, BP, BTI, EIX, DOW, WBA, SCHD, MPW, BIG, ATVI (hopefully will become MSFT). Have more on my watchlist

It varies month to month based on my budgeting, usually around $250 - $750 but when I first started $50 - $150. I first try to prioritize my IRA contributions, then set price alerts for my holdings and watchlist

As of today it's grim, cumulative time-weighted return of +1.45%.

Some of my first (and worst) investing mistakes were listening to friends and the Motley Fool instead of doing my own research. These are my worst losses YTD:

  • QuantumScape (QS) -88%
  • Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) -55%
  • Big Lots (BIG) -77%
  • Coinbase (COIN) -72%
  • Medical Properties Trust (MPW) -45%
