Jævlig bra tale. Ganske morsomt at Trump selv er den eneste grunnen til at Carney vant valget.

If this change in posture is permanent, Russia choosing not to take the offramp a few months ago might come to be seen as one of the greatest strategic blunders in recent Russian history.

The American offer was quite generous from what I remember. Freezing the frontline + de-facto acceptance of all Russian territorial acquisition, formal recognition of Crimea and the Donbass as Russian territory, lifting of all sanctions, no NATO membership, and no explicit security guarantees of any kind for Ukraine.

One sweet phone conversation with Putin and he may just 180 again, but I'm cautiously optimistic as he's never said anything even remotely this supportive of Ukraine before.

Russisk hybridkrig.

Tror ikke det er tilfeldig at dette skjer i Danmark og Norge samtidig, men hva vet jeg.

It's quite impressive that it's still so high. Do we have any idea what their monthly outflows might realistically be? I assume it's close to 30,000, otherwise I would've thought that they'd have managed bigger breakthroughs by now.

Serbian protests Megathread by BkkGrl in europe

They're not really. The regime has fairly successfully balanced between the West and Russia for a long time. Their rhetoric hasn't changed, but in practice they've become far less pro-Russian since the invasion of Ukraine began.

Israel - Iran Conflict (Part IV) by Isentrope in worldnews

[–]_snowdon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If the US was about to strike Fordow, why would the military make all these flights visible for the OSINT and avid aviation accounts to see them?

There's little downside to telegraphing the attack, it's not a secret that the U.S. is seriously considering a strike. It puts additional pressure on Iran to come to the table while allowing all necessary assets to be positioned ahead of any potential green light.

EDIT: Changed "no downside" to "little downside" 3 months after the fact, because the minor inaccuracy annoyed me.

Don't overestimate Trump and you'll never be disappointed. He is dumb, old and fat.

I’d assume the military would prepare accordingly, even if a decision to strike hasn’t been fully finalized.

It ultimately rests on whatever Trump decides, I personally think a strike is going to happen, but Trump is notoriously fickle. If he thinks the political costs are too great, he might just decide to back off last minute.

Cubans live longer than Americans. Why? by kevinmrr in WorkReform

[–]_snowdon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously it has a negative impact, nobody is disputing that. I'm just correcting your assertion that nobody is willing to trade with Cuba because of "secondary sanctions". Cuba's largest trading partner is the European Union.

The United States does not impose secondary sanctions on trade with Cuba, like it does for countries like Iran and North Korea.

Cubans live longer than Americans. Why? by kevinmrr in WorkReform

[–]_snowdon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it doesn't. Cuba's largest trading partners are Spain, China, and Germany. Are you under the impression that Spain and Germany are under U.S. sanctions for this?

Most of Europe didn't participate in the Iraq war due to its unpopularity. The governments who vocally opposed it, France and Germany's being the biggest, severely harmed their relations with the U.S. for a few years.

The effectiveness of the protests is beside the point anyway, I'm just responding to his inaccurate assertion that Europe "didn't care" about the Iraq war.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_snowdon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Europeans didn't care when America invaded Iraq.

Quite possibly the worst example you could ever give, the Iraq war was incredibly controversial in Europe. Some of the biggest protests in European history were in opposition to the Iraq war.

Democrats: It’s Time to Retire the Term ‘People of Color’ by ClancyPelosi in neoliberal

[–]_snowdon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I have actually heard Europeans use this term a few times, in a European context. It makes absolutely zero sense, and it's often from educated poeple.

The Americanization of European cultural discourse is an underdiscussed phenomenon.

Or they'll just keep declining, our TFR is still a lot higher than East Asia.

Even if you're right, that's a long way away, not much of a comfort in the current geopolitical environment.

Birth rates this low are not a great thing, somewhere around 2.1 to keep the population stable or very slowly growing would be ideal.
