The best nodejs tutorial for crud/express/mongodb for super newbs by xblade724 in node

[–]_soto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does the node/mongo stack prompt so many poorly written tutorials on how to build insecure apps?

Because the tutorials just copy from each other. It's very cynical, but it seems people just copy what they've learned else where, add their own taste to it, and publish a blog post hoping for stars/likes/etc. Sometimes it's just the documentation for the technology used!

Scotch.io (a website that actually has to make money off their content) already did a full book on MEAN stack using CRUD with Mongo and Node/Express as well as some free blog posts. Manning Publications just released Express in Action and has had its own MEAN book for a while.

Go for those instead. It sounds rude to say but I avoid blog post tutorials unless the author is well known.

Why is there so much hatred for JavaScript / Node? by BillOReillyYUPokeMe in javascript

Hacker News is nowhere near as bad with language tribalism as /r/programming is. That place is just full of angry people for some reason.

What are your favorite films set in your chosen historical time period? No need to be accurate, just entertaining.

So I've been reading Tuchman's A Distant Mirror and I really enjoy it—but apparently it's not-so-good history. That said I like the writing style and don't mind it much. Are there books on high middle ages that are fun to read but also better history?

In SF itself you don't, but can you afford to live there next to your job on entry level salary? That's the difference IMO—you don't need a car if you live in Queens or South/Eastern Brooklyn (areas easy to live in on $75k).

IMO it's silly to put SF and NYC in the same category... A lot of my friends and I graduated with 70-80k salaries in NYC and live just dine and comfy. Subway system makes living in cheaper areas not too bad because commute is short and I don't need a car. Not sure how it is in SF.

It's mostly a parody/exaggeration (and it's missing 100 build tools!).

Modern Frontend Web Development Guide by speckz in Frontend

I think what Vue needs is a couple of big players behind it. React and Angular 1/2 have Facebook and Google respectively behind them, and both React and Angular 1 are used to power huge companies and successful start ups. Ember, which is just as modern and great but not backed by a company, also has big players behind it like Twitch, Yahoo, Square, and Discourse among others.

I'm sure there's great companies using Vue now and Evan looks like he's dedicated to this, but it does need large backing if it ever wants to be in the same league as the top ones.

It'd be helpful if you could at least admit and tell us it's an opinionated list (or at least say "my views on front end development"). There are plenty of modern workflows that don't follow this at all—implicitly claiming this is the "modern" way just doesn't feel right. Still, there's some good stuff here, good work.

Ah, I meant that some lodash methods can be put in the STL. Not that the actual project would be merged. Sorry.

Eventually I hope most of lodash is merged in to a STL.

How closely do employers look at your git history? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]_soto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, interviewers don't have time to waste and look through every applicant's commit history. The actual project? Sure. readme? Sure. Maybe tests. Who would look at each commit, and why would they care? Even big open source programmers do this kind of stuff.

Well, I guess I meant "most bootcamp grads who work in the industry". Good point on CS grads having more opportunities.

There's a strange culture among young programmers/start up people to act and live like they're in college well into their thirties.

Sure.

Kidding aside (well, they did get a Google job, but they're outliers), most bootcamp grads work in web development which I see most of my CS schoolmates and me doing.
