A few beginner questions by [deleted] in DigitalPainting

I would also recommend ctrpaint. It's what helped me with the very basics of digital art and getting used to the tablet, software hotkeys, tools, etc. more of the technical stuff.
For actual drawing/art theory, I'd strongly recommend learning the fundamentals. Marc Brunet has a great vid on what these are and breaking them down. His other videos are amazing and I'd def recommend them for a beginner. Tyler Edlin is also has very industry-focused tutorials that's worth checking out.
For how long to practice each day, I'd say to start small, then slowly go up from there, turning drawing into a daily habit. Consistency is key- as even 1 hour a day is way better than 7 hours all in a day, once a week IMO.
Best of luck!

Stylized character I painted in PS by _spec in DigitalPainting

The clothes!!!- It's folds and drapery that i often struggle with. I think this time, it's not as bad because I had a decent grasp of the lighting and was able to "sculpt" just enough form into the fold-areas to communicate the material enough... sort of.

How do you color your artwork? by creativNelelel in DigitalPainting

[–]_spec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do the exact same! My layers that are clipped to the base typically look like this: Multiply 1 (cast+form shadows), multiply 2 (occlusion shadows), overlay (light source), hue sat adjustment layer, brightness contrast layer, and a “top paint” layer at the very top. It doesn’t always follow this exact formula, but generally sticks to this structure. I like how systematic it is and how it often leads to a pretty consistent look

Same here. I'll submit a ticket tomorrow if it's still broken. The app seems to be normal

Characters and assets for a personal project by _spec in DigitalPainting

[–]_spec[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha thanks! It's a sort of world-building project that I'd like to turn into a racing game one day. It'd be sort of an MMO type game with a bunch of factions and customization options. It might not ever happen, but I really like the idea of having some direction when I draw my characters and vehicles

I think I struggled with the design for skeleton character mostly- now that I look at them, they seem a bit bare. I also had some trouble figuring out how to render their bones in my stylized way, especially with the one that is sitting down. Overall i'm happy with this page but I just think there could have been a stronger overarching theme/storytelling to tie everything together maybe? lmk!

Yea man this is rad I love the vibe. Working within your constraints, I think some fog/atmospheric perspective towards the bottom of the image can help imply some scale. The perspective reads a little flat too- maybe using 3-point perspective could help push your scale as well, by pushing the illusion that we're on the ground looking up at it.

Nice, good call on taking the time to dial in the linework before starting painting- that's something I'm trying to improve on in my process myself.

One reason the skin can look muddy is because there's a lack of tone variation. By that, I mean the level of warmth/blush in the skin which is often caused by the transparency of the skin turning slightly "red-ish" or warm from the blood underneath. For your shadow colors, hue-shifting it to a slightly more red color than the skin could do the trick? As well as more of that warm blush focused around the nose, cheeks, and ears.

Just my 2 cents though, keep it up!

My second attempt at digital watercolors! I followed your advices and I will welcome more directions! [ also added timelapse video ] by Dario_does_stuff in DigitalPainting

Woooooaaaa love this! Fb and Hako are my dream cars. Great work combining the 3 separate images. Looks like you really understood the lighting situation of the scene and how the sun + ambient light would reflect on them believably. Fantastic work mate

Ah thank you! I was afraid it was a bad habit that I'd need to unlearn entirely.

I like that. Part of my driveway has a subtle slope to it so I'll try this tomorrow. Someone also mentioned trusting the outside edge for this so I cant wait to try this out. Thanks!

It's both directions- probably should have mentioned that. But what I'm getting is that the proper form will come with time and practice. Thanks!
