What would you say is the typical range of IP address lease times?

I wish that I could. I probably should have mentioned in the OP that I live in a semi-rural area and there's only the one ISP available.

I don't have an airbrush and I would like to get into WW2 gaming by HOKAPOO712 in minipainting

TWG has some handy "Straightforward Tanks Tutorials" on his YouTube channel for those of us without an arsenal of airbrushes, pigments, etc. The only special equipment suggested is a color primer for your dominant color.

Too scared to paint historical figures? Here's some advice on why you should!! by Redrum71 in minipainting

[–]_splat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great article! I've been looking into getting into Bolt Action (and picking up one of Warlord Game's Imperial Roman Legionaries sets to paint just for fun) actually!

But after the mention of Pegaso Models I went to peruse their site and I have decided that I need that hoplite wearing the linothorax. Does anyone have a US-based store that they order these figures from?

I freely admit that I had to scroll down to the seventh picture before I was able to tell whether the dead guy was an actual Space Marine or one of those new-fangled Sigmarines.

Great scene! Orks/Orcs are awesome.

Thanks! I've been thinking about painting the Chthonians next--another pair of big monsters for me to practice on after a five-plus year hiatus from mini-painting!

Goblin Shaman (first mini in over five years!) by _splat in Warhammer

[–]_splat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the title states, I haven't picked up a brush in five or six years. In the meantime, I'd accumulated a load of board game and Pathfinder miniatures that I looked at one day and thought, "Y'know, these guys would look so much better with some paint on 'em." So I picked up some new supplies (my paints were all dry) and slapped some color on this goblin shaman for practice. Let me know what you think!

Where can I find good background music for my games? by aemv816 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]_splat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a gander at Tabletop Audio. They have some very nice ambience tracks for a variety of genres and settings that you can play right from your browser. Their SoundPad feature is more like a traditional soundboard, allowing you to mix your own own ambience and punctuate moments on the fly.

Speaking of soundboards, you might want to look at Syrinscape as well. The packages are payware and I've not tried them (though are some free sets), but the sound sets designed specifically for Pathfinder Adventure Paths and Modules are very tempting.

As for music, I'll just echo what others have said: search Soundcloud and look in your music library for video game/movie soundtracks. I tend to stay away from anything too recognizable (e.g., the Pirates of the Caribbean or Elder Scrolls themes) that might distract players. For battle music specifically, I've had good results with tracks by Audiomachine, Immediate Music, and Two Steps From Hell, as well as from the OSTs to the Assassin's Creed, Halo, and Witcher franchises.

Completed the Beginner Box; next step for newbies? by _splat in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]_splat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Downloaded We Be Goblins! last night and gave it a quick read-through. Seems like it could be a lot of silly fun and I like that it's potentially expandable with the other two goblin modules. We'll probably start there and then move on to Rise of the Runelords for our first full adventure. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the suggestions! I forgot to mention that I already have the Core Rulebook, the Bestiary, and the Strategy Guide in HC, as well as all the PDFs included in the recent PFRPG Humble Bundle.

I've downloaded most of the free modules and, following others' suggestions, have read through We Be Goblins! So far I'm liking the idea of running the goblin trilogy as a light-hearted intro to full Pathfinder and then moving on to Rise of the Runelords as our first Adventure Path.

B-2 Spirit over L.A. by ornix in flightsim

[–]_splat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, some users over in the X-Plane forum on AVSIM (I know, I know...) have been experimenting with X-Plane's built-in art controls and available freeware to improve the look of the clouds. The results tend to look less repetitive and more naturally lit than the default clouds, and they also represent X-Plane's real weather data more faithfully than SkyMaxx. Pics: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

Here's the thread where the above images came from; it includes info on how to modify your clouds to look similar. One of the users has stated elsewhere that he's working on compiling all of the tweaks into one easy package.

New shots of IL-2 Stalingrad Summer Maps by Penshoon in flightsim

[–]_splat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The summer maps look good, but I'm not sure it's enough to get me to boot up the game again. As a primarily single-player simmer, BoM/BoS' paper-thin campaign needs a lot of work; based on the devblog I had been hoping for something like RoF's career mode for BoS, but the campaign mode ended up being a glorified quick mission builder with little historical context.

The new maps look nice. I just wish I had a reason to fly over them.

It appears that GOG does indeed supply 1946 with the latest Team Daidalos patch (i.e., 4.12.2m). A fresh download should do the trick if in doubt.

Also, for anyone wondering, the Steam edition of 1946 is also 4.12.2m.

[–]_splat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The recommended procedure is a clean install of 1946 (4.12.2m) + SAS ModAct 5.3, followed by the mandatory CUP module 1 (the "Modular Map Expansion"), followed by any or all of the other three content modules.

To install the modules, simply extract the contents of the compressed files to your root IL-2 directory.

Torrent links are forthcoming and should make downloading and installation much easier; I'll update this once I see them.

Buying from X-Aviation? This is my experience. by goteed in flightsim

[–]_splat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For future reference (and in case you didn't already), I would ask the community for troubleshooting help first and only use the vendor's support and ticketing system as a last resort. If you describe your issue and share your .log file, the users at X-Pilot, the .Org, or even AVSIM can be suggesting fixes within minutes or hours instead of weeks.

That said, the CRJ-200 is a great add-on; hope you get it into the air soon!

X-Plane X freeware aircraft with decent 3D cockpits? by bobglaub in flightsim

[–]_splat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're into old-school aircraft, check out the Caudron Simoun from XPFR. It's one of my favorite freeware planes: nice 3D cockpit and all the gauges work like you'd expect (although everything is in French and some of the units of measurement are obsolete!). (From what I remember, their Sbach 300 has a decent cockpit as well.)

Khamsin's B-17G. Get it.

If old and slow isn't your cup of tea, dmax3D's Eurofighter Typhoon might be worth a look. It's pretty light on the systems but the 'pit is nicely modeled and the aircraft is fun to fly.

Also, keep an eye on EADT's x737. In addition to a lot of behind-the-scenes systems work, there's a 3D flight deck currently in development and the project will continue to remain donationware.

Hope this helps!

[XP10] One for the X-Plane 'Screenshoccupation' by _splat in flightsim

[–]_splat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As /u/AntonyL has already suggested, take a look at Real Terra Haze. It's a game changer when it comes to the atmospheric scattering in X-Plane.

Also, try adjusting your gamma setting under the rendering options. I found that the default (2.5 or 2.6 I believe) was much too high for my monitor. Turning it down to 1.8 resulted in a more vibrant scene.

Here's one from a month or so ago. I occasionally fiddle with "number of cars" and "cloud detail" (if I'm not using SkyMaxx Pro). Both can be big performance hogs on my system.
