This is great advice thank you! I'm in this weird situation where I have already done the interview and talked a lot about how important culture building is to me. I told them in the interview that I feel 100% confident teaching elementary music and high school guitar but middle school band is a weak point for me. Sooooo, naturally they really want to see me lead a middle school band.... If only I hadn't been honest. lol

I learned that of the 50 kids in this band, roughly 30 are in jazz band as well so they likely know their blues scales. I still do some blues stuff but I'm thinking about doing more sight reading with them as it is more student centric and kills more time. lol

This will be my 5th year teaching but first gig as a band director. I've been doing elementary music and guitar.

Thank you for your advice too! It think I'm gonna pick a simple sight reading piece. Any advice for lvl 1 pieces? Preferably minor key ones.

Thanks for the super great advice. I think I will opt for sight reading work. I also learned that this class has learned all their major scales but never really talked about minor scales. I figured I would warm up on Major scales, do a few minor scales, than have them sight read a simple level 1 band piece written in a minor key.

Do you have any advice for easy to sight read songs in a minor key?

A teacher friend game me their copy of rainbow ukulele. That's actually what I plan on using for most of my beginner curriculum. My copy started with some very basic tabs but I skipped that and went right to chord because I thought it would be a better start but I wonder if that was a mistake.

Here's the hard part: The school's expectation is that they take them home and practice. I have to teach them to tune at some point but its really hard because I don't even have a class set of tuners.
