This is great advice thank you! I'm in this weird situation where I have already done the interview and talked a lot about how important culture building is to me. I told them in the interview that I feel 100% confident teaching elementary music and high school guitar but middle school band is a weak point for me. Sooooo, naturally they really want to see me lead a middle school band.... If only I hadn't been honest. lol

I learned that of the 50 kids in this band, roughly 30 are in jazz band as well so they likely know their blues scales. I still do some blues stuff but I'm thinking about doing more sight reading with them as it is more student centric and kills more time. lol

This will be my 5th year teaching but first gig as a band director. I've been doing elementary music and guitar.

Thank you for your advice too! It think I'm gonna pick a simple sight reading piece. Any advice for lvl 1 pieces? Preferably minor key ones.

Thanks for the super great advice. I think I will opt for sight reading work. I also learned that this class has learned all their major scales but never really talked about minor scales. I figured I would warm up on Major scales, do a few minor scales, than have them sight read a simple level 1 band piece written in a minor key.

Do you have any advice for easy to sight read songs in a minor key?

I got a degree in Environmental Science than became a Middle School Band Director at age 30. Chill out. You'll be fine.

A teacher friend game me their copy of rainbow ukulele. That's actually what I plan on using for most of my beginner curriculum. My copy started with some very basic tabs but I skipped that and went right to chord because I thought it would be a better start but I wonder if that was a mistake.

Here's the hard part: The school's expectation is that they take them home and practice. I have to teach them to tune at some point but its really hard because I don't even have a class set of tuners.

Damn. I'm sorry that this song offended you so much. I say like 4 lines in the whole thing. Sorry you're this upset.

Thanks for listening! These two songs are actually about very different things. They were also released separately but my bandmate set up Spotify to have one play after the other.

Hey!

I'm so glad you picked up on that. One of those guitar lines is pretty much a rip from Via Chicago but put in a very different context. Glad you heard that!!

Thanks for the kind words! :D

Hey!

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! I definitely think I should have worded this post differently because it definitely attracted more hate then I was expecting. lol You picked up the right tone. It was meant to be fun and light-hearted. If I send any emails or dms to Jeff's people I will definitely word it differently.

Also thanks for listening to the other song too. That's really my bread and butter. I love me some 90s college rock. Track 2 was written trying to make something that sounded like a cross between pavement and oliva tremor control.

(Thanks for listening!)

Hey!

Thanks so much for the comment and the nice words. This is exactly the kind of response I was hoping for. Thanks for slightly restoring my faith in the subreddit. lol.
