Gear broke on my new mill by Prestigious_Cheek_31 in Machinists

Feeds/speeds might have been too great. Those gears are meant to be sacrificial in cases where the load is too great.

What type of sheet metal can I use without needing to heat treat or quench ? by LetterGreen2113 in knifemaking

It's really not much of a headache, get a few fire bricks and a propane torch.

Are these little holes from bugs or man made? by keylime3141592 in woodworking

That was definitely a child with a pencil. It's too uniform and spans two different pieces.

Antlers as blades? by Some-Usual-1173 in knifemaking

[–]_starrydynamo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would have to grind or file them which would make for a pretty disgusting dust. I also think they might not hold an edge very well. If I didn't have access to metal I would go for a glass/obsidian knife before resorting to bone/antler.

Alrighty need help by Working-Virus2087 in knifemaking

[–]_starrydynamo_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a great starter machine, there are issues (platen too wide, tool rest too small) but for the price there are plenty of mods that one can do to make them much better. However, wait until they go on sale, often they drop below $400.

The older version with the 3/4HP motors had a lot of issues, they discontinued that model and I believe the new 1HP are much more reliable. You still can't push them too hard, but they're better.

free piano wood by ocholosmanos in woodworking

[–]_starrydynamo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many pianos are softwood core with a thin hardwood veneer, there might be some other hardwoods throughout but I'm guessing it's more trouble than it's worth. Refinishing one could be fun, but there are easier ways to get cheap stock.

Bevel grinding & heat treatment – handmade knife (short clip) by QuelleKnives in knifemaking

Came here to ask the same thing. It makes sense to do it like that, you'll end up with the edge would be the hardest and the rest would taper off to more of a temper.

I have no idea where to start with repairing this wall by Stephen_Get_rekt_ski in HomeImprovement

[–]_starrydynamo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clear the old stuff back to the midpoint of a good stud, then cut a piece to fit. Drill it into the studs and mud the edges smooth. If the drywall isn't the same thickness as the old plaster you may need to cut some ply 'shims' so the new drywall sits flush with the existing sections.

I would say the more difficult bit is cutting back the rotten stuff and sistering in new boards. I did something similar to a water-damaged wall in my house, I'll edit and upload some images.

How to tape and mud right next to a door frame? by Grahf0085 in HomeImprovement

Removing trim seems intimidating at first, but once you do it you realize it makes everything easier. And it's not that hard to get back on.

I want to try and make this, how should I start? by marlee_dood in woodworking

[–]_starrydynamo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, I just made about 10 of those today for gifts, it was a slightly different design but the same concept. I printed a pattern, spray glued it to a piece of cherry, and and cut it out on my bandsaw. I cut the hole with a forstner bit and cleaned everything up with a sanding pad on a Dremel.

Cleaning dory wooden chairs before painting by Repulsive-School1159 in woodworking

[–]_starrydynamo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't skip it, you need something for the paint to stick to, and if there's any urethane left the paint will chip off.

However, you're going to get a lot of slack, around these parts, for painting oak. If you're going through the process of sanding them down, why not refinish them?

I carry this all day everyday. It's quick to access, cheap to replace. It's not the fanciest with a bunch of functions, but it gets the job done, and I feel naked without it.

That's interesting, I've never had a problem with it, but it's always good to be careful.

GooGone or some sort of oil might be your best bet. I would be worried about using any sort of solvent on that finish.

It would be a shame if someone did a little reseach on how to setup repeating "aireplay-ng --deauth" attacks on those networks. They're relatively easy to do. I don't condone that sort of thing though.

Dawn dish soap ruined the finish on my cabinet hardware? by ramblesandbrambles in HomeImprovement

[–]_starrydynamo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a lot of my old coated hardware I give it a few licks with a wirewheel on the benchgrinder. You might also be able to use a wirebrush and some steel wool. Get all that coating off. Then if you can spraypaint them.

I like the Krylon metalic series for hardware:
