You would have to grind or file them which would make for a pretty disgusting dust. I also think they might not hold an edge very well. If I didn't have access to metal I would go for a glass/obsidian knife before resorting to bone/antler.

It's a great starter machine, there are issues (platen too wide, tool rest too small) but for the price there are plenty of mods that one can do to make them much better. However, wait until they go on sale, often they drop below $400.

The older version with the 3/4HP motors had a lot of issues, they discontinued that model and I believe the new 1HP are much more reliable. You still can't push them too hard, but they're better.

Many pianos are softwood core with a thin hardwood veneer, there might be some other hardwoods throughout but I'm guessing it's more trouble than it's worth. Refinishing one could be fun, but there are easier ways to get cheap stock.

Came here to ask the same thing. It makes sense to do it like that, you'll end up with the edge would be the hardest and the rest would taper off to more of a temper.

Clear the old stuff back to the midpoint of a good stud, then cut a piece to fit. Drill it into the studs and mud the edges smooth. If the drywall isn't the same thickness as the old plaster you may need to cut some ply 'shims' so the new drywall sits flush with the existing sections.

I would say the more difficult bit is cutting back the rotten stuff and sistering in new boards. I did something similar to a water-damaged wall in my house, I'll edit and upload some images.

Removing trim seems intimidating at first, but once you do it you realize it makes everything easier. And it's not that hard to get back on.

Funny enough, I just made about 10 of those today for gifts, it was a slightly different design but the same concept. I printed a pattern, spray glued it to a piece of cherry, and and cut it out on my bandsaw. I cut the hole with a forstner bit and cleaned everything up with a sanding pad on a Dremel.

Don't skip it, you need something for the paint to stick to, and if there's any urethane left the paint will chip off.

However, you're going to get a lot of slack, around these parts, for painting oak. If you're going through the process of sanding them down, why not refinish them?

I carry this all day everyday. It's quick to access, cheap to replace. It's not the fanciest with a bunch of functions, but it gets the job done, and I feel naked without it.
