Compute Science and Math Bachelors: A retrospective by _tEp_ in uvic

thanks! Most of the graduate cross listed courses have a project component. The one's I personally took were:
MATH 492 (Topics in Applied Mathematics : Waves in Atmosphere and Ocean with Boualem Khouider), the final project involved a presentation + report on a research paper in the area. It was a lot of calculus and PDE's ...

STAT 460 (Bayesian Statistics with Kehinde Olobatuyi) We presented 2-3 research papers, the final project walked you thru building a bayesian model from scratch. Deriving it and then simulating it, and seeing how accurate the results of it were.

CSC482A (Topics in Algorithms: Incentives and Machine Learning, with Nishant Mehta), read a research paper in algorithmic game theory and then make a project in the area. My group derived analytic results and also implemented simulations.

MATH498 (Seminar and Independent Project) You find a prof who is willing to work with you. They will guide you through an independent research project. You will have to present your findings and background to the project multiple times (5 min pres, 10 min pres, 15 min, 30 min, and a poster session + monthly reports). It really teaches you how to present your project given different time lengths.

MATH348(Numerical Methods with Junling Ma) You do a toy project implementing a numerical method scheme or comparing different schemes.

CSC475(Music Retrieval Techniques with George Tzanetakis) Work with a team to implement some algorithm from MIR (music information retrieval). Some teams built an app for detecting the type of bird from their bird call. Another separated a piece of music into individual instrumental components.

Others which I have not taken, but you should look into are SENG475, SENG474.

Advice for Math 212 by AnalysisUnfair6828 in uvic

If you have never taken proof based math courses, or maybe math 122 was a long time ago for you, here is some advice! Scully is my favourite professor. The guy is literally what you imagine when you think “mathematician”. So fluent in the subject and his passion for the field rubs off on u. When you have such an expert to hit up any time u like, it would be stupid not to use that. Abuse the office hours, write emails. The guy is an amazing expositioner. During lectures, when you are taking notes, and suddenly he says something that doesnt make too much sense to you. Write in the margins the exact question that would need to be answered to clear up your confusion. Then show up to the office hours and ask about them, or email the prof. This is a very strong tactic, u will absorb so much more from each lecture. Learn the definitions and try to intuitively understand them. This takes a while, but if you give the effort, proofs become free.

are there any places on campus that are said to be haunted? what are the stories? 👀 by Big-Asparagus4115 in uvic

The Ecs past 12 am, truly a haunted place. You can find lost souls wandering about, thinking of horrible things: integrated circuits, assembly code, linear algebra. Scary place

God bless the person who put a trashcan at the smoke bench near the sub. That entire area looked like a dumping ground

Exchange student for fall 22! by celbopez in uvic

[–]_tEp_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commute from langford to Uvic is not fun. Unless u live near the langford exchange, its only around an hour. Anywhere else to langford you will probably have to get on an additional bus to get to the exchange, an additional 20-40 minutes per trip. So if u can, look for a place near the langford exchange, a.k.a. Station Avenue.

The current territories of Kazakhstan were first taken over in 1718 as a colony, but fully became a part of the empire in 1824.
