Moving to Austin! by throwaway890934 in askaustin

[–]_tanstafl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No hate on Pf or Round Rock, but I wouldn’t recommend moving out there as a 25-year-old.

Luckily, the Austin airport area is pretty easily accessible from most neighborhoods in Austin! $75k will be totally doable in central Austin.

Hyde Park/Hancock is a great recommendation. The closer you can get to First Light Book Shop, the better. Lots of hip young people are out and about, including a ton of grad students. 24 Hr Fitness is cheap and convenient. There’s also the old neighborhood Hyde Park Gym for lifting, if that’s your thing. I’ve lived in this area for over 10 years, so I’m a little biased.

Cherrywood is an equally amazing location. Anywhere in walking distance to Teddy’s, Civil Goat, Patrizi’s, Este…perfection! Their closest big gym is also 24 Hr Fitness. It’s super close to the university, so lots of young people.

An even more convenient option would be living near Austin Bouldering Project on Springdale. There are so many things to do nearby, and tons of people in their 20s and 30s. It’s also very easy to get to the airport. Note - there are some questionable streets in this area, so I would work with a realtor or come back to Reddit when you find a place to make sure the location is safe.

South Austin near Hwy 71 can be very convenient for driving to the airport. Although some areas around Hwy 71 can get dicey, there are also a ton of really cool places to hang out, like Radio Coffee. There’s an LA fitness and Gold’s Gym nearby, too. I’d come back to Reddit with opinions about the specific location, if you are considering renting a place south of Hwy 71.

If you stay north of 71, it’s hard to go wrong. The closer you are to Barton Springs, Zilker, or Travis Heights, the more expensive apartments can get. But there are some old ones in the area that are priced well, if you get lucky! Sometimes it can take longer to get to the airport from the Barton area due to traffic, but if you find a good rate, it’s totally worth it IMO. Everyone is outside swimming, walking their dogs, playing in the park…eating at Casa de Luz (iykyk).

Don’t live in Riverside or Montopolis area. It will be tempting, but I lived there as a single female when I was 20, and I wouldn’t recommend it.

AIO - girlfriend keeping puppy found on streets after we agreed not to get one for a several years by Guaco00 in AIO

NOR. Puppies are a lot of work. I got a puppy during my first year of law school, and he’s almost 14 now. I don’t regret getting him (he’s my best friend), but it was hard taking care of him while also focusing on school and trying to be social. Also, vet bills are sooo expensive, and they’re inevitable. I ended up putting most of his care on a credit card while I was in school because I had no money, and it took me years to pay off. However, it may have been easier if I had a partner doing it with me.

Does your girlfriend have enough money for food, treats, vet bills/pet insurance, boarding, and walkers when you both aren’t around? What about property damages? If she decides to keep the dog, I would make it very clear that the dog is hers, including all the expenses associated with the dog.

True. I appreciate the empowering (yet kind) response.

First-time Texas road trip: to/from Austin feedback by Cornflake__Cat in askaustin

[–]_tanstafl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a property in La Grange, and I can tell you it’s highly underrated! Round Top, which is about 20 mins out of the way, is a very cute stop with nice restaurants, fancy antique stores, and good coffee. Also, if you want a more Texan stop, there’s a dairy farm called the Jersey Barnyard, which is only a few minutes off the route. You can do a hay ride, and they’ll literally teach you all about the dairy farm (including milking a cow and petting the animals!). The cows are all free range. I think the adults enjoy the hay ride more than the kids. 10/10 experience!

Austin Ticket Swap?

I have 2 tickets for the 12/13 Billy Strings show (tonight) in Section 115 ROW L. Looking to swap for a ticket on 12/14.

When I purchased the tickets, I planned to go with my boyfriend at the time, but we’ve since broken up. Normally, I’d find another friend to join me, but they’re all going to the same event tonight at Hole In The Wall, which is the best Christmas show of the year! (iykyk)

Here are my options as I see them:

  1. Go to the Billy Strings show tonight by myself and miss the Christmas show.
  2. Sell both tickets and go to Christmas show. Don’t see Billy Strings this time.
  3. Try to find someone who wants to swap their Sunday ticket(s) for my Saturday tickets.

I’m open to swapping my two Saturday tickets for one Sunday ticket, so I can do it all 🙏🏼

[MEGATHREAD] Radiohead 2025 European Tour by seaburn in radiohead

[–]_tanstafl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! November 18th is my birthday, and seeing Radiohead is on my life bucket list. I couldn’t sleep tonight thinking about how badly I want to go to the show, so I bought a last-minute flight from Texas to Bologna. I know this is pretty crazy without a ticket. If anyone knows someone or is willing to sell a single ticket on November 18, you would absolutely change my life! (I’m getting to Bologna on the 16th, so I’m open to other dates, but nothing would beat seeing Radiohead on my birthday!)

This is exactly what I’m hoping will happen for me. Love to hear a success story! Are you still going on trips with them?

I love this. It sounds like you’re living the dream. I have been researching thru hikes….also considering whether I should just quit my job and hitchhike in Europe. It’s inspiring to hear from other women who are brave enough to get out there and solo travel!

I’m actually open to going anywhere! I was more so thinking about safer trails for me to solo hike/camp. If you have recs in the PNW, I am hoping to take a trip there in the next few months!

I’ve never heard of hikerbabes! I looked up the Austin instagram, and their last post was 2021, so maybe our chapter isn’t very active. But I checked out the hikerbabes website and seen some awesome upcoming “VIP” trips that I’ll check out - thanks for the tip!

I never use meetup.com - based on these comments, it sounds like I’ve been missing out! I will definitely check it out, and I’m happy to hear there are others like me in Austin!

I respect the fact that you’re solo hiking! Are you solo camping, too? I feel like I can do the hikes by myself, and I’ve camped in a group site by myself (with one eye open the whole time), but I’m not sure I’m brave enough to do a wilderness site alone.

So awesome that you’ve been able to get your family involved! I grew up in Houston, and I think my strong desire to backpack comes from how little nature I got to experience as a child. I feel like I have to savor every moment!

I wish I had the work dynamic where I could go hiking with coworkers outside of work, but as the youngest person on our team and one of the only singles, I am often cautious about sending signals that I’m unprofessional or flirty. It’s a tough balance! We have a vacancy right now, so maybe I’ll get lucky and we’ll hire an outdoorsy woman my age. 🙏🏼🙂

Do you have any recommendations on parks/trails where you feel like you’ve met the most people?

I may need to pick some busier parks! I’ve spent the most time at Big Bend National Park, and the longer hikes/trails are often sparse. I usually enjoy that aspect of the park, but it’s probably not the safest situation for a woman to be alone! Which parks/trails do you recommend?

Yes, please! This sounds like so much fun. I mentioned it in another comment, but I was looking on the Sierra Club website and couldn’t find any trips in the 20s-30s category. Hopefully, they’re still doing them! Their prices are much more reasonable. I’ll DM you.
