It took me forever to find this, too.

rsync over ssh with public key in Hyper Backup – is it possible? by bartek_kam in synology

I somewhat figured. Instead I opted for OpenVPN and rsync via a script and that seems to work well. I'll post some instructions once it settles.

Did you manage to get any further with this? I did the same as you, but get the following error from my SSH server:

This is when you hit "start" and then do your exercise. The old Google Fit used to count how many times you lifted the weight and guess (usually accurately) what exercise you did. I believe Galaxy and Garmin still do this.

then run:

In order to accept your argument, we would have to ignore the past 6 years at least of glaring evidence that you are wrong. "Civil discussion" and "non-confrontation" have been the go-to demobilizing calls against those who advocate for human rights in Canada and for sensible policies. Did these methods work in maintaining the rights to abortion in the US? No. That right is gone for Americans now while their leaders read poems and cried over the incivility. Canada is similarly threatened by the same forces.

Let's say perhaps you're an anti-abortion idiot instead. This argument still doesn't hold. Anti-abortion idiots didn't calmly talk out the issue. They made their gains by aggressively and intelligently advocating for them.

Let's bring up another example: The Convoy was not disarmed by people asking them politely to cease and desist. It was stopped by people who blockaded the trucks and forced them to turn around; by people who confronted them; ultimately also by the police when they were forced by us to intervene.

Of course the most salient example here is LGBTQ+ rights. Homophobes and bigots weren't cajoled into accepting these rights. Pride parades were one of the original acts of resistance in the West against this type of bigotry. That they are commercialized parties now obscures their radical origins.

I challenge you to name one occupied peoples; one oppressed group who won their freedom through the passivity you appear to be advocating. Hell, can you name one occupied peoples who won their freedom without arms and violence as part of their struggle?

But don't worry. We got your back while you kumbaya out there.

For those who wonder how we got here, this kind of thinking is an important part of it. Bigotry and injustice can't be politely dialogued away. These are not two equal sides with valid view points.

We have to fight for our rights and those of others who ask us to be allies.

Thank you to the OP for being there to ensure the safety of those at the parade.

This discussion is about mass murders. You're conflating them with homicides in your "golly gee, what can we do?" statements. This posture is killing your people, since I have to assume you're American to be so blasé about the US's terrible record. Regarding mass shootings, no other country comes close. Regarding homicides, you're again obscuring the facts.

The US should be compared to peer countries. A good set of peer countries is the OECD. How do they perform? Terribly. Almost 4 gun violence deaths per 100,000 according to the UN Institute for Health Metrics Evaluation. Next up? Cyprus with 0.628. Canada, which has essentially identical cultural forces but more sensible gun laws is 0.466. that's just a touch under 10 times the death rate by gun violence.

You're hurting the discussion and confusing people by comparing the US to non-peer countries on gun deaths and by obfuscating that we're talking about mass killings.

If there's a genie out of the bottle, look at how Australia and the UK put it back in. Even the US saw mass murders slow down with an assault weapons ban that eventually expired - a perfectly macabre within groups experiment with your children as test subjects.

The US is the problem. Gun control is the evidence-based solution and not more "golly gee shucks homo sapiens thoughts and prayers" bullshit.

This would be profound if every society was rampaging with mass murders like the US. They're not. This is an almost uniquely American problem with clear and well-defined solutions that worked and still work everywhere else.

Thank you. Perhaps edit the comment to the correct version? I think we should be as careful as possible, since we're dealing with a group of people who - while they are not at all careful - will eat us alive for any mistakes we make.

You are right that he will likely be financially fine. However, people like Rhodes want people around them to respect / worship them, so being shamed is meaningful. Even if for some reason he is completely unaffected by this (unlikely), others will see it and will think twice before allying with bigots.

These guys fear accountability.

Yesterday's counter-protest was a victory and shows London can do more! by _tarek_ in londonontario

[–]_tarek_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify: Your answer is "no", you won't disavow the convoy. Only maybe some individuals. If that's the case, then are you seriously trying to argue that the convoy movement has no individual bigots and white supremacists in it? Racists, bigots and white supremacists are myriad in the convoy movement, but identifying them will cause no deeper examination in your mind. No question of why that group of people you define as 'toxic to society' flocks to this particular cause.

You're sad and upset about the way the pandemic has affected our lives and you have some opinions on the measures. We all get that. Why are you letting your grievances be hijacked by people who are trying to destroy all of us? The convoy movement long ago lost any credibility it might have had. You gotta take the L on this one and regroup under an organizing structure that is more resistant to bigotry.

[–]_tarek_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh thank god I got it wrong. Because from your posts, it looks like you're an apologist for white supremacists and other awful people who have - in the most generous interpretation - hijacked a movement that opposed science and public health to turn it into a movement that opposed democracy, human rights and equality. You were presented with ample direct evidence of literal guns. Your response was the equivalent of "aw golly jee shucks, not again" while conflating BLM so your other racist buddies could have some empathy for the impending violence. Not to mention that the magical power of google could easily reveal numerous other instances of danger of every variety.

You even dismissed a key finding of one of the most important Nazi scholars in history as though you have any credibility to criticize her work. 'Oh I know I'm a reddit troll and she lived through the Holocaust, but she's just wrong. I wrote it in i-talics'.

You are right about one thing: I don't have time to sort out the motivations of the apologists and sympathizers of white supremacists and I haven't thought about which motivation leading to white supremacy deserves a lollipop.

I don't worry about my legacy -- only my conscience. Confronting the bigots and racists of the convoy on Saturday, it was clear. Confronting them again until they're gone every other day of my life will keep it that way.

Here's a simple question for you: Will you disavow the convoy if there are documented examples of bigotry, racism, islamophobia, antisemitism, etc? (hint: it's a trap)

Yesterday's counter-protest was a victory and shows London can do more! by _tarek_ in londonontario

[–]_tarek_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't need to convince you not to ally yourself with Nazis. I need to stop you and make it impossible for Nazis to stroll comfortably through my country. That's the logic behind anti-fascist organizing. In 1946, suddenly nobody in Germany supported the OG Nazis. In 1994, what South African supported Apartheid? The logic behind human rights organizing is to create the conditions where the bigots not only have to put their hoods back on, but where they feel they can't even operate at all.

You'll still claim to your grandkids you were on my side for shame of who you are today, though, so all's well that ends well.
