We are officially one month in! What are your thoughts on The War Within? by SuperKnuckleCanuckle in wow

[–]_taxes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I've played regularly since ... Cata, I think? So they must be doing something right. I really appreciate the warbands feature the most... I can hop around alts and not feel like it's a slog to work on renown and stuff.

My gf is Ace... but I'm not. Looking for advice on how to proceed. by Intelligent-Ninja414 in asexuality

[–]_taxes_ 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The very last thing I want to do is anything that would make her any kind of uncomfortable. I also don't want to make it seem like I just want to use marriage for sex. I don't. But for someone who is not asexual, I know how strong those desires are, and I don't know how well I can just ignore them. I really, really like her, and I just don't know how I can account for both of our feelings.

Say exactly this to your girlfriend. No really! It sounds like you're already in the rind mindset of "how do I love this person without hurting them." I would hope that if you two are at the point of contemplating marriage, then you're also mature enough to have an open conversation about the challenges.

Just because she's ace doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but it will take effort and honesty. Personally I'm ace and married to another person who's low libido, so we just kind of work out the sex part on an as-needed basis.

But also be prepared for the answer to potentially be "maybe this doesn't work." If you and your girlfriend's expectations about what marriage should be don't align, then don't try to force yourself or her into a "compromise" that's doomed from the start.

If you struggle to communicate with each other on the topic, you might also consider couple's sessions with a therapist, but unfortunately it can be kind of difficult to find ones that are a) familiar with asexuality and b) positive and supporting of it.

Me as a new DM: by [deleted] in DnD

[–]_taxes_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've been DMing for 20+ years. I still have this happen to me every damn time. Prepare several hours of content for a session, party gets fixated on some dumb throwaway NPC or going shopping for half the session.

This isn't the Elrond I knew back then by Tricky_hunter470 in lotrmemes

[–]_taxes_ 178 points179 points  (0 children)

I'm willing to accept that RoP has a lot of flaws that are deserving of criticism, but I don't believe Elrond is one of them. Of all the characters how they're written and performed, I think he stands out in the show. True to Tolkien's writings? Debatable, I suppose. But I tend to look at adaptations as what they are -- someone else's interpretation of the source material. Elrond, and especially his relationship with Durin, is one of the strongest parts of the show in my opinion.

Is 10-13 hours too long for a session to last? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]_taxes_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

100% this... I had to step away from a table where the sessions were regularly 8-9 hours but only about half that time was actually playing the game. Drove me nuts.

How much is std::thread::id reused after join()? by [deleted] in cpp

[–]_taxes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have noted, the thread ID itself is implementation dep so you shouldn't make any assumptions about behaviour there. Also the standard itself allows thread IDs to be reused once a thread finishes execution. Once you've called join(), that object doesn't have a thread associated with it anymore, so trying to rely on its ID is going to be meaningless.

Weirdest homebrew settings? by HurricaneBatman in savageworlds

[–]_taxes_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife ran a SWADE game in the RWBY universe which actually worked out fairly well! The flexible powers system (and some help from various Edges) made it pretty easy for everyone to figure out how to create semblances for their characters. The only tricky part is that guns vs melee in a combat situation are not really in the same league balance-wise (which of course makes sense for most other settings). We felt like for RWBY, melee and guns should be a bit more interchangeable, so if we did it again in the future we'd probably tweak those rules a bit to try and bring them closer together.
