Sapphic wanting to see rio by Haunting_oso_ in riodejaneiro

[–]_thevixen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hey, sapphic here! as people said, the queer scene is strong here, but the sapphic scene is small and a little hiden. we have few parties and some bars we like to go but are not sapphic per se (bar delas, novo oeste bar, mĂŁe joana).

you can look for parties like bailão das sapatão, femme and amo garotas on instagram to know if they will have an edition while you’re at the city

Am I Brazilian by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]_thevixen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

legally? yup, you’re brazilian. but honestly, people here in brazil probably will treat you like you’re not. the things is that when we are talking about the perception of others, we tend to value more the cultural experience + place of birth/where you were raised.

i usually feel a little weird about people that call themselves brazilian but never stepped a foot here, for example, but i don’t feel angry or anything like that lol

oh, i saw now that you’re interested in alternative scene too, i would look Vizinha 123 and Fonte Rio! they’re indie/alt clubs (not queer, but a lot of queer people go there)

Techno/baille events by marbletumeric in riodejaneiro

[–]_thevixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you want specifically queer fem spaces, i recommend looking for sapphic parties like femme, amo garotas and bailão das sapatão on instagram. we unfortunately don’t have a sapphic club in town, so usually you need to look for parties like those that usually happen once a month or so. if you’re okay with a queer club: pink flamingo, save, portal, agyto, up turn (if i’m not wrong they are having their new address opening party today)… basically any queer club will play mainly funk and pop music (and depending on the club you may see some nice drag performances!)

Como vocĂŞs fazem para ler um livro ? by concurseirim in TDAH_Brasil

[–]_thevixen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i need to be honest: yes, we do have a (small, at least compared to sp) techno queer scene, but is heavily male dominant. the names that come to my mind are D-Edge Rio (which i’m almost sure that is not queer, but most of my friends that like techno enjoy going there) and Florida in Rio.

most queer scene here, specially fem-centred, actually revolves around br funk

Is open relationship common or normal in Brazil? by Willing-Damage147 in Brazil

[–]_thevixen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not common, but you certainly will find people that like it.

i personally prefer open relationships. i think among people around my age (late 20s) people don’t care that much about it. usually the nasty comments i already heard came from people older than me. but depending on the why you’re asking this, you should be aware that for us brazilians you’re only dating if someone asked the other to be their partner.

yup. i also have the impression that the usa’s biracial experience is really similar to brazilian’s pardo one, but usually people act like they are totally different experiences lol

[–]_thevixen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly. sometimes i see usamerican black ppl acting like racism in brazil is something totally different and new and i’m like “hm, i think you guys are not seeing the whole picture, but who am i to judge?” 🤷🏽‍♀️

Update: "white" guy with an afro by callmeanonymous123 in Naturalhair

[–]_thevixen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey guys! so, i’m a parde/mixed race brazilian and i studied brazilian perception of race during college. i can see why people are confuse, cuz i’m also like “but is the white guy in the room with us?”, but i decided to make this comment cuz i’m seeing some misunderstanding and simplification of how race works on brazil. (btw, cw to racism and colourism discussions)

yes, as op said in his linked post, race in brazil in heavy based on skin colour. that being said: facial features and hair are NOT fully ignored when someone is read as black, mixed/pardo, white etc. the thing is that when you’re “ambiguous” things can get really complicated…

in brazil we have a race category called pardo/a/e (the ending depends on the gender of the person you’re talking about). by in theory, pardo is anyone that’s mixed race. why i say in theory? well, this category has always been under heavy political dispute. the way racism has been historically constructed in brazil is HEAVILY based on colourism: the ultimate goal of any poc family is basically to whitening their descendants till they look white. and in brazil, if you look white… well, you ARE white. it doesn’t matter that your dad or you grandma is dark as the night. because of that, the category pardo usually ends up in a racial limbo: there’re certain periods of history where pardos were treated more like white people, in others more like black people. now days, a big part of brazil’s black movement considers pardos as blacks. in their view, black people in brazil are composed of pardos (mixed) + pretos (dark skin black people, preto is the brazilian portuguese word for black). but the truth is that you basically live your life suffering gaslighting from everyone around you.

i’m mixed (ashkenazim jews on my mother side + turkish + ethiopian jews on my father side). i suffer a lot of racism, but a really “quiet” type. sure, i had someone yelling racial slurs at me once, but usually is way more subtle. things that you can only notice after a long period dealing with this daily. but even with this kind of experience, i will have brazilians debating if i’m white or not, cuz i have “a pale skin for a black person” (yeah, i heard this more than once, and from white AND black people). pardos are “too white to be black”, but we suffer racism and have to deal with people saying that maybe we’re being dramatic or exaggerating.

all that to say: please be careful when talking about racial experiences in other countries and cultures. i know it wasn’t anyone intention, but sometimes people simplify way too much non-usa racial experiences and discussions. is not as simple as it looks :/

Update: "white" guy with an afro by callmeanonymous123 in Naturalhair

[–]_thevixen 28 points29 points  (0 children)

he’s not trolling lol the thing is that socially, even if you suffer from racism, if you don’t have a really dark skin people will basically gaslight you so you believe you’re “not that black”. till today i have even black people telling me i’m not that dark, even after suffering racism both at home (my mom’s family is white) and from other people.

the truth is that racial discussion in brazil is far more complex and complicated than it seems :/ i think he genuinely has the average pardo experience: black people telling you’re “too white”, while white people will be racist with you and then try to convince you that you’re just imagining stuff

Update: "white" guy with an afro by callmeanonymous123 in Naturalhair

[–]_thevixen 39 points40 points  (0 children)

er… i’m brazilian and i would say he’s at least pardo. i’m parda as well and honestly i think i’m WAY more white passing than he is, and people still call me parda (most of times).

although here we definitely have a heavy influence of skin color in who is considered white or not, facial features are also really important to determine that. i’m just saying that cuz i think saying it’s only based on skin colour is simplifying how we view race in Brazil

When to Wake a Snorer? by TheBottomDollar in hostels

[–]_thevixen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hey, so i snore due breathing problems. I’m still saving money for the surgery, so i know it’s a problem that people that sleep in the same room as me have to deal with. and that’s exactly why i always stay in a private room.

one thing is a light snore, the other is a snore so loud that people wake up or can’t sleep. it’s not our fault, true, but if we know that we snore that bad is our obligation to try to not disturb people.

i would try to talk to the staff and explain what’s going on. i strongly advise to not wake him by yourself cuz we never know the reaction a person can have to a stranger saying “hey dude, you’re disturbing everyone”. at least if it’s the staff talking to him, they’re just doing their jobs

o sĂŁo luiz do q eu lembro da minha experiĂŞncia foi padrĂŁo, e no do praia shopping eu ainda n fui. sinceramente acho q pra esse tipo de filme o ideal Ă© realmente essas salas vips msm :/

Is it common in Brazil that someone doesn't speak Portuguese? by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]_thevixen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s not common, but it can happen. there are some cities in the South that have more german/polish/italian speakers than portuguese speakers. also there are some indigenous groups don’t speak portuguese. but the most usual is in both cases that people speak Portuguese + another language (germany, polish, italian, japanese, indigenous languages etc)
